Classic, Lido, Cameo & Ritz cinemas to show buzz films exclusively
Releasing exclusively to Classic, Lido, and Cameo Cinemas in Victoria are three highly-anticipated, Oscar calibre films: THE IRISHMAN, MARRIAGE STORY, and THE TWO POPES
Ritz Cinemas has these films exclusive in Sydney’s east, being one of only three venues in New South Wales to be showing them on the big screen.
THE IRISHMAN, MARRIAGE STORY, and THE TWO POPES have all made waves premiering at world class festivals recently, and are each garnering excited Oscar buzz among critics and fans online and in reviews.
Melbourne cinephiles who love to watch every film nominated for an Academy Award in the lead up to Hollywood’s night of nights should settle in and get comfortable at Classic, Lido, or Cameo over the next few months. These are the only cinemas in the city where audiences can see these films on the big screen before they inevitably end up in the Oscars race.
This announcement cements the reputation of Classic, Lido, Cameo and Ritz Cinemas as the “home of the Oscars” for 2019/2020. It also comes off the back of the recent news that these four cinemas are also showing THE KING exclusively in Victoria and Exclusive in the East at Ritz.
Releasing on November 7 is Martin Scorsese’s latest gangster epic, THE IRISHMAN, which had its world premiere opening the New York Film Festival in late September. Critics are calling it a masterpiece, and a fitting, epic culmination of Scorsese’s life’s work. It currently holds a 100% fresh rate on Rotten Tomatoes. The cast-list is packed with Scorsese regulars and acting heavyweights including Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Harvey Keitel, Anna Paquin, Jesse Plemons, Bobby Canavale, Ray Romano, and more. Tickets go on sale on Tuesday 8 October.
Then there’s the Scarlett Johansson vs Adam Driver divorce drama MARRIAGE STORY, written and directed by Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, Frances Ha, The Meyerowitz Stories). It was hailed as Baumbach’s “best yet” by The Hollywood Reporter after it premiered at Venice Film Festival, and currently holds a 100% fresh rate on Rotten Tomatoes. It releases on November 14.
Finally, THE TWO POPES sees acting greats Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce giving outstanding performances as Pope Benedict and future Pope Francis in the story of Francis’ surprising ascension in 2013. Directed by Fernando Meirelles (The Constant Gardener) and written by Anthony McCarten (The Theory of Everything, Darkest Hour), THE TWO POPES was a hit when it premiered at the Telluride Film Festival at the end of August. It releases on December 5.
In addition to these four exclusive titles, Classic, Lido, Cameo, and Ritz Cinemas screen all the other Oscar-hopeful titles now and over the next few months including Ford v Ferrari (Nov 14), Jojo Rabbit (Dec 26, with first Australian screenings at Classic and Ritz on November 20 and 21), Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Dec 26), Bombshell (Jan 1), and Little Women (Jan 1).
