Classic Rooftop summer season
Classic Cinemas in Elsternwick introduces the enviable new kid on the block of Melbourne outdoor cinemas with the launch of Classic Rooftop Cinema this summer.
After some months of construction, Classic Rooftop Cinema kicks off its inaugural program with a bang – Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker screening under the stars for a whole week from Thursday 19 – Wednesday 25 December.
Following Star Wars, the inaugural Classic Rooftop program is filled with an array of new release films (able to be programmed on the actual day of their release in cinemas), from blockbusters to documentaries and arthouse fare, as well as Retro Wednesdays throughout January.
New Year’s Eve presents the purrrfect opportunity for a feline-themed fiesta with a screening of star-studded musical Cats seeing in the roaring 2020s. Audiences are invited to dress up for a kitty catwalk before the film, and there’ll be themed milky cocktails and mocktails available from the bar.
Greta Gerwig’s take on Little Women, and Guy Ritchie’s return to the gangster flick The Gentlemen screen on alternate nights in the first week of January, as well as a one-off session of Leonard Cohen documentary Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love on Sunday 5 January.
Australian director of Animal Kingdom, Justin Kurzel’s new film True History of the Kelly Gang screens on Friday 10 January; Bombshell starring the powerhouse trio of Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, and Margot Robbie shows from Thursday 16 January; and Tom Hanks heartwarmer A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood starts on Thursday 23 January.
Cinephiles will love New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi’s anti-hate satire Jojo Rabbit on Saturday 28 December; award-winning French queer romance Portrait of a Lady on Fire on Sunday 29 December; and Sam Mendes’ single-take war epic shot by legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins, 1917 showing from Thursday 9 January.
On four Wednesdays in January, fun Retro Wednesday favourites screen at Classic Rooftop. Labyrinth celebrates what would have been David Bowie’s birthday on Wednesday 8 January; teen classic 10 Things I Hate About You screens on Wednesday 15 January; 80s romantic fairytale The Princess Bride is on Wednesday 22 January; and Spike Lee’s steamy summer drama Do the Right Thing sizzles up on the screen on Wednesday 29 January.
There’s plenty for families too with Jumanji: The Next Level on Boxing Day; A Shaun the Sheep Move: Farmageddon on Tuesday 14 January; and Dolittle, starring Robert Downey Jr. from Friday 17 January.
Located four storeys up, Classic Rooftop has impressive views of Port Phillip Bay and the skyline of Elsternwick. In fact, the Classic Rooftop bar is one of the only rooftop bars offering these kinds of views on the south side of Melbourne city.
Complete with comfortable director’s chair seating, on staggered levels towards the screen, the dedicated Classic Rooftop bar, and headsets for audio, Classic Rooftop Cinema provides a unique, fun, and exciting visit to the movies.
Existing as a picture theatre since 1911 (initially as The Elsternwick Theatre), Classic Cinemas is the longest continuously operating cinema in Victoria. Now boasting ten indoor screens as well as the new Classic Rooftop, a revamped cinema 1 and bar, and street-facing box office windows, the building constantly continues to develop on its legacy and historical significance as a home dedicated to film worship in Melbourne.
