Movie Trailer – The Leadership
Compelling and revealing documentary The Leadership is set for release in cinemas nationally in October, Dark Matter Distribution announced, along with the news of the film’s selection for the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
The theatrical season kicks off on October 1 in Perth, followed a week later on October 8 in Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne. Hobart opens October 15 with other states to be announced soon.
Produced by multi-award-winning Bunya Productions’ Greer Simpkin (Mystery Road, Sweet Country), The Leadership is an observational documentary written and directed by Ili Baré in her feature-length debut.
Set against the planet’s last untouched wilderness, The Leadership delivers an altogether unexpected and original reflection on what it takes to be a good leader, while unearthing the systemic obstacles to women’s advancement in science and beyond.
Dark Matter’s Head of Distribution Courtney Botfield said, “The Leadership has all the twists and turns that make documentary so compelling, set against the spectacular and cinematic landscape of Antarctica. The film’s ‘warts and all’ approach to documenting the first ever Homeward Bound expedition is truly fascinating.”
“Everyone who sees this film responds by needing to talk about the events and issues revealed in the film, so we are presenting a range of Special Event Q&A screenings in every state as a key part of our strategy. We hope the film prompts the audience to consider the issues of our time – what does effective leadership look like and what kind of leadership does the earth need right now?”
“This is a film that needs to be seen on the big screen, and we are thrilled to support the cinemas by bringing the film to audiences in the way it was intended – in all its big screen cinematic glory.”
The Leadership had its World Premiere at this year’s Sydney Film Festival and screened as part of the 2020 Melbourne International Film Festival. It has also been selected for the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

The world is crying out for a new model of leadership, but what is it? One woman thinks she has the answer. Australian CEO and ‘dreamer’ Fabian Dattner, leads an international group of 76 female scientists on an Antarctic voyage designed to transform them “into the sort of leaders they want to be.” Her hope is that once these women are primed to lead in science, they will be able to make meaningful change around the world. But on board Dattner’s own leadership style and philosophy are both severely tested, as the women’s deeply personal stories of workplace harassment and more are revealed.
Set against the planet’s last untouched wilderness, The Leadership delivers an altogether unexpected and original reflection on what it takes to be a good leader, while unearthing the profoundly troubling systemic obstacles to women’s advancement in science and beyond.
The Leadership was shot on location in Antarctica, Argentina, Indonesia, China, Australia, United Kingdom, France and United States.
The Leadership is Produced by Bunya Productions in association with Screen Australia, Good Pitch Australia and Screen NSW, with support from Documentary Australia Foundation and the Shark Island Institute. Director/Writer: Ili Baré; Producer: Greer Simpkin; Executive Producer: David Jowsey.
The film is one of the 2016 cohort of Good Pitch Australia films alongside 2040, In My Blood It Runs, Ghosthunter, Dying to Live and Guilty. The Leadership will release in cinemas nationally in October 2020 through Dark Matter Distribution, and will be accompanied by a 3-year social impact campaign.
