Exhibition on Screen’s “Easter in Art”

In the lead up to Easter an encore Australian release of Exhibition on Screen’s acclaimed Easter in Art, explores “the greatest story ever painted”, as interpreted by many of the world’s most famous artists across the centuries. The story of Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection as told in the Christian Gospels, has been prominently upheld in western culture for more than two millennia.

Recognised as one of the most significant historical events of all time, it has equally attracted the attention of the world’s great artists. Depictions of what has come to be known as the “Easter story” appeared as early as the third century, came to dominance in the Renaissance period, and have continued to fascinate successive generations of contemporary painters. From the triumphant to the savage, the ethereal to the tactile, many of the western art world’s most famous masterpieces focus on the story of Jesus’ final days on earth.

Filmed on location in galleries around the world – from the UK to the USA, Europe and Israel, Easter in Art is a fascinating exploration of the ambition, the pain, the suffering, and the glory of this timeless narrative. Directed by multi award-winning British filmmaker Phil Grabsky this beautifully crafted art-documentary explores the myriad ways in which artists have told and retold the Easter story throughout history, and in doing so, captures the essence of dominant western culture over the past 2,000 years.

With exclusive access to a stunning selection of some of the greatest artworks ever produced, from luminaries including Caravaggio, Dalí, El Greco, Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Rubens, Titian, Velázquez to name but a few, this is a rare opportunity to fully appreciate their genius on the big screen. Regardless of one’s religious beliefs, it’s hard not to be moved by the mastery of their work, and the intensity of emotion imbued within every brushstroke.
