:: Just a Gob on a Stick

By: Carmine Pascuzzi

Outspoken and entertaining, English-born Simon Hill has been commentating on major football games around the world for more than 25 years. Simon has become so much more than what his colleague once described as ‘just a gob on a stick’. Simon’s devotion to his beloved Manchester City, led him to follow his passion into a career working as a football presenter and commentator in both radio and television in the UK before moving to Australia, where he has become the voice of ‘the world game’.

In this book, Simon reflects on some of the most memorable football games he has been a part of, including the Socceroos beating Uruguay in 2005 to qualifying for the World Cup, and then for the excitement of Australia’s first appearance at a World Cup since 1974.

English-born Simon Hill worked for more than a decade in both radio and television in the United Kingdom before moving to Australia in 2003. Landing his first job at a local radio station in south Wales, Simon’s career progressed to BBC local radio and eventually BBC World Service and BBC Radio 5 Live, where he worked as both a presenter commentator on Premiership and European football.

Simon made the move to TV with the new ITV Sport Channel before joining SBS Sport and then Fox Sports. Simon has been lucky enough to work on some of the world’s greatest sporting events, including the FIFA World Cup. Simon is married to TV presenter Stephanie Brantz. Away from the studio, he enjoys playing the drums, reading up on political history and following his beloved Manchester City.
