EMIRATES TO BRING VENICE TO FLEMINGTON
Venice, once one of the world’s richest cities, and the Emirates Melbourne Cup, one of the world’s richest horse races, come together with artistry this year in the grand and exciting Emirates marquee at Flemington racecourse. Water beneath floors, à la carte dining (ristorante-style), a gondola shaped bar and even Murano glass combine in what will surely be the most impressive and ambitious marquee ever seen in Cup history.
As Emirates celebrates the launch of its Venice-Dubai route, the team behind the airline’s always impressive Melbourne Cup Carnival hospitality has stopped at nothing to recreate the unique glamour, tradition and beauty of this famous Italian city. As Stephen Pearse, Emirates’ Vice President, Commercial, Australia, puts it: “Our challenge was to bring this new Emirates destination to life … at a racecourse … on the other side of the globe.”
Just as Venice is a city built on an island in the middle of a lagoon, the marquee is an island within the famous Birdcage enclosure. “The façade will be inspired by the rich tapestry of the buildings that line the Grand Canal,” explains Pearse. “Through the arched windows guests can catch a glimpse of the chefs as they work or spy the serving staff as they move across a small bridge from the kitchen to the ristorante area.”
Much effort has been put into designing and sourcing fixtures and furniture for the marquee. After entering through an ornate Venetian-style reception - complete with Murano glass - guests will pass through a wrought-iron gateway designed in homage to the ornate gates, grilles and doors that characterise the lower levels of Venetian buildings. Once inside the space, one walks under a bridge modelled on the countless examples that Venetian waterways are so famous for, before ascending to the main area.
Once upstairs, guests can relax at an oversized, black, high-gloss gondola bar, manned by staff in the uniform of the gondolier. The backdrop to the bar features a display of fine Italian Murano glass and all furniture in the space is inspired by the famous Venetian boat: rich velvets, brocades, trims and finishes in rich gold and deep red.
Emirates’ ristorante - another first on this scale for the Birdcage - will offer a full, sit down restaurant experience, complete with white tablecloths, Italian wines and the style and service found at Harry’s Bar and the cafes that ring St. Mark’s Square. Its décor will feature a surround of arches, bentwood furniture, plus a softly suspended canvas roof.
As in previous years, Emirates is the only marquee to offer fully plumbed (and staffed) bathrooms or ‘Sala da Bagno’. In 2007 a generous balcony area will extend around two complete sides of the marquee for excellent track views and, as the pièce de résistance, a traditional painted roof with squared timber beams and a central row of softly screened skylights - common in walled Venetian buildings - will complete the marquee.
It is sure to be a great highlight of the VRC Melbourne Cup Carnival.

**SAAB has the coolest spot at Flemington**
Celebrating 60 years of automotive innovation, Saab will bring a touch of ‘midvinter’ in Sweden to spring in Melbourne with the ‘Convertible on Ice’ marquee at this year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival.
The Saab marquee takes its inspiration from the ultra-cool 60th anniversary celebration at the famous Ice Hotel in Sweden. Combining two elements at the heart of Saab’s Scandinavian heritage – ice and iconic open-air driving – the ‘Convertible on Ice’ marquee invites guests to enjoy a uniquely Saab experience and a first for Flemington. The Electric Blue Saab 9-3 Convertible may have top-billing, literally, two and half metres above ground atop the recycled shipping containers that make up the marquee’s facade, but it’s the exclusive SAAB ICE BAR chilled to minus 20 degrees that will command the attention of the Birdcage.
Communications Manager for Saab, Emily Perry, says the ‘Convertible on Ice’ Marquee is an Australian twist on the garage made of ice that Saab built around its anniversary Convertible at the Ice Hotel 200km north of the Arctic circle this winter."
“The Saab marquee has always reflected our commitment to style and design, this year our aim was to push the boundaries and create something unique that will leave a lasting impression.”
Once inside the innovative walls of the marquee, a magnificent central space welcomes guests as they reach the top of the stairs. Split level, two of the shipping containers provide the perfect balcony and viewing platform for guests. This multi level dynamic space with its minimalist feel is designed to create a journey for guests through the day.
As with Saab cars themselves, the marquee also introduces an element of surprise and delight with a small staircase from the central marquee area leading guests to the BLUE ROOM - a secluded space inside one of the shipping containers where guests can chill out. This intimate space features a white shag pile floor, white quilted walls and roof, and is furnished with glass coffee tables and clear Louis Ghost Chairs.
As the party heats up, guests can slip into the SAAB ICE BAR – the first of its kind in a temporary space and a uniquely Saab experience. Large white coats will keep guests warm as they perch themselves on perfectly sculpted ice stools to enjoy a cocktail or two. The atmosphere is further enhanced by magnificent lighting and a mirrored roof that exaggerates the allure and sparkle of the ice.

**Patrizio Buanne to perform at the Melbourne Cup Carnival**
The Victoria Racing Club is excited and proud to announce, that ‘The Italian’, Patrizio Buanne will be a special guest at the Melbourne Cup Carnival, and will perform exclusively for two events whilst here.
Patrizio will perform at the Flemington racecourse on Crown Oaks Day, Thursday, November 8, before the running of the Crown Oaks. His second performance will be at one of the hottest days of the Spring Racing Carnival social calendar, the Crown Oaks Club Lunch, which last year saw the fabulous Chris Isaak drive the audience into a wild frenzy with his performance and charm. And this year the guest performer will not disappoint! This is a doubly delicious treat for over 1300 of Melbourne’s luckiest at the Crown Oaks Lunch, Wednesday, November 7, 2007.
These will be the singer’s only two performances during his five day visit to Melbourne.
Since the release of his Double Platinum debut album The Italian in 2005, Patrizio has been busy conquering the world. Selling out headline shows across Europe, Asia, Australia and America, Patrizio has been winning over leagues of fans for his outstanding live shows and countless admirers wherever he goes.
Patrizio hopes to emulate the success of his national football side. Following the World Cup win for Italy in 2006 it’s a great time to be Italian. And Patrizio did his bit for the winning team. His track ‘Stand Up For The Champions’ was played before and after every game in every stadium throughout the World Cup, including the moment the cup was lifted! More importantly, it was also played in the Italian dressing room before each game. It obviously brought the Italians the luck they needed, and he will hopefully bring some of that winning luck to the punters at the Flemington track on Oaks Day.

**Beach Boys rock the VRC Chairman's Dinner**
The annual VRC Chairman's Dinner is the prelude to the four-day VRC Spring Carnival at Flemington. Held on the Thursday evening before Derby Day, some big names in the history of music have made themselves available to attend and entertain brilliantly in previous years. In 2007, the racing industry guests were treated to international stars The Beach Boys and Christopher Cross.
The Beach Boys have been legends of music for over forty years and Christopher Cross made his mark in the late 1970s and early 1980s with several big award-winning hits. The Beach Boys wound up a terrific night with a set in excess of one hour and they played all their great hits to a corporate crowd that wanted to party. And party strongly they did.

**Fashions On The Field winners - Milliner's Awards**
The 2007 Millinery Award took place on Crown Oaks Day, as part of the Myer Fashions on the Field competition at Flemington. The event was hosted by Channel Seven’s Rebecca Maddern and international celebrity Carson Kressley and was televised nationally. This year’s award went to the supremely talented milliner Kim Fletcher of Elsternwick, Victoria.
Kim’s millinery masterpiece described as the black and gold “Goddess” lived up to its name. She was inspired by the turbans seen on the European catwalk and transformed the European look into one Australian women would enjoy wearing. The ‘Goddess’ sculpted turban was made of straw cloth, a new fabric that only made it to Australian shores this year.
First runner up went to the very talented Melissa Jackson of Fitzroy, Victoria. Melissa called her creation the Mystique Webbed Veil. The hat covered the models face and was a web of stiff black fabric. This piece was unique in itself and could also be worn two ways. By turning it around, the models face was exposed with the black webbed structure taking on a whole new look.
Second runner up went to Tracey Mackinnon of Calandra, Queensland for her hatinator creation of white structured swirls with royal purple detailing.
Kim Fletcher, Melissa Jackson and Tracey Mackinnon won a bevy of fabulous prizes, including a trip for two to Dubai flying business class with Emirates Airline, Myer vouchers, Antler Luggage, and a magnum of Seppelt Salinger

**New Zealander wins the Fashions On The Field National Competition**
The Myer Fashions on the Field National competition reached its pinnacle on Crown Oaks Day at Flemington racecourse as fashion from across Australia took centre stage with glamorous finalists competing for the $47,500 prize package and title of National Winner at Flemington on a glorious day in Melbourne.
In the Victoria State Final the Derby Day winner Rhia Taranto, Cup Day winner Lorraine Cookson and Oaks Day winner Jamie Lowe battled it out for the title of Victorian State winner and the coveted place in the National final. After her Cup Day dominance Lorraine Cookson proved too good and duly took her place in the National final along side Cleo Mitchell from New South Wales, Elaine Tiong from South Australia, Lauren Walker from Queensland and Farrin Ripp from Western Australia.
The finalists from each state in this year’s competition made it extremely tough for high profile judges such as Oscar winning costume designers Tim Chappell and Lizzy Gardiner to decide who should win. Eventually, taking a clean sweep for the day, Lorraine Cookson proved the favourite and took out the prestigious role of National Final winner in her self-designed classic belted grey silk, tweed jacket with a beige silk tulip wrap skirt complemented by her grey silk fedora style hat by Dollie Vardin Millinery.
Hot on her heels was first runner-up Cleo Mitchell from New South Wales in her trendsetting neutral trouser and champagne blouse ensemble with a stunning modern bronze sun visor piece from milliner Jessica Macken, and second runner-up Elaine Tiong from South Australia in her oriental meets 1950’s black and white number.
Lorraine Cookson hails from Karaka, New Zealand and is an avid fashion and racing fan, with strong connections to racing, Lorraine breeds and owns racehorses with her family. The mother of two made the $2000 investment in her outfit which she designed herself when she had it made up overseas and has never looked back, scooping up an amazing prize pool of almost $70,000 including a trip for two to the Dubai World Cup flying Business Class with Emirates Airline, almost $10,000 in MYER vouchers and a SAAB convertible for 12 months valued at over $20,000.
Overall, it was another hugely successful year of ladies fashion at Flemington with the ever expanding Myer Fashions on the Field National Competition attracting ladies from not only all around Australia but now from across the seas.

**Our Eyes At The Carnival**
Last year, a record crowd of just over 129,000 people attended the AAMI Victoria Derby Day at Flemington. It was too big for authorities to allow a repeat in 2007, so it was decided that pre-selling of race tickets would occur and that the crowd capacity for each day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival be kept to a manageable 120,000 or less.
Although the weather threatened in the morning, the 2007 Derby Day turned out to be a fine clear day. The Emirates Melbourne Cup and Crown Oaks days provided beautiful weather. The Melbourne Cup saw a brilliant burst over the last two hundred metres by Efficient to win the big race. Who will ever forget his amazing run to win the AAMI Victoria Derby in 2006? This horse has provided two fantastic runs in two years to mark his worth as a champion. There was plenty of good value in the racing, throughout each day, to give experts and mug punters a chance.
The social event, that the VRC Spring Carnival has become, was bigger than ever. Out near the course, the public revelled in the atmosphere, and eyes were on the Fashions On The Field. It was lovely to see the VRC Ambassadors Kelly Landry and Daniel MacPherson be part of those proceedings, Kelly wearing a gorgeous Thurley design on Derby Day. The Birdcage set the tone with some wonderfully adorned marquees by some of the biggest companies represented in Australia. All the talk in the lead-up to the VRC Spring Racing Carnival was about the Emirates marquee - a huge Palace-like construction with a lovely balcony where guests could relax in the open and watch other parts of the course - and which reportedly cost over $2 million to construct and fitout. Inside, the decorative room was filled in flavours of Italy, most particularly Venice.
Guests were greeted by the marquee host Cesare and the Italian waiters and waitresses made you feel special, especially if you spoke Italian. The food and beverages were delicious and the coffee was great too. Some of the guests looked after by Emirates were Eddie McGuire and several Collingwood footballers, James and Erica Packer, Brodie Harper, Megan Gale, Hamish & Andy, The Veronicas, Nick Giannopolous, Grant Smillie and girlfriend Kasia, Shane Warne, Stewart Appleby, Melissa George, Alex Dimitriades, Chong Lim, Richard Nylon, Matt Gudinski, Gary Sweet, Ann-Maree Cooksley, Garry Lyon, and many Channel Seven personalities, including Renee Bargh, Chris Bath, Andrew Daddo, Jennifer Adams, and Johanna Griggs. Special mention to the band who played according to the mood, including some old Italian songs such as “Besame Mucho” and “Serenata”.
The other marquees in the birdcage had their own vibe and colour and weren't about to be outdone by others. The Lavazza bar, as was their wish for it to be named, hosted several well known guests throughout the day, including Rachel Hunter. Rachel was very comfortable there and took time to study the horse form to place a few bets. She was very accommodating for anyone who asked for a photo. As she was in Sydney earlier in the year to launch her Lola swinwear range, which we featured in our Fashion Wrap section, I asked her about it, and she has been very pleased as to how successful the swimwear range has been. She was looking forward to having a lovely few days for the Derby and the Melbourne Cup. The coffee, the food, and the Italian singer were a delight as Lavazza demonstrated why it has been a great brand in Australia for many years. Other guests there were Jet lead singer Nic Cester, Boutique nightclub owner Darren Thornburgh, FRM Model Management's Stephen Bucknall and his international models, including Jena Yeargan.
The Lexus marquee was one of the most impressive in the birdcage. The champagne and seafood were a delight and the top level had a wonderful flower display. It hosted notable guests including the Collingwood contingent, Eddie McGuire, Kristy Hinze, Carson Kressley, Max Markson, Kate Waterhouse, Hamish & Andy, Richard Wilkins, Mignon Henne, Gorgi Quill, and Rob Mills. The Lemongrass Martini proved to be a popular drink and it added to the ambience of the two-storey marquee. Many drooled over the oysters and sushi and the service was excellent.
L'Oreal always emphasises style and their marquee was no exception as it was very lively throughout the Carnival. Female guests were able to get pampered in the special “Glam Room” whilst bar staff worked feverishly all day to serve the many customers who came in and out. Most notable was the vibrant mood on Crown Oaks day. The place was abuzz with excitement and it was a great looking crowd. Guests included Nick Giannopolous, Alex Dimitriades, Jules Lund, Lucy Hinckfuss, Kelly Landry, Tanya Neville, Alan Didak and minders, Karen Webster, Gary Ablett Jnr and girlfriend Lauren Phillips, and Emma Freedman.
The decision by Saab to transport six tonnes of ice in a shipment container, in order to create its Ice Bar, was inspiring. The “Convertible On ice” marquee allowed guests to experience temperatures between minus 7 and 20, rugged up in heavy jacket and gloves, whilst being served Absolut Vodka. The staff did a great job and it was an innovative addition to the Birdcage. Guests included Kate Ceberano, Georgie Cavanagh, Mignon Henne, Gorgi Quill, and Olympian John Steffensen.
Jennifer Hawkins attracted much attention wherever she went and was often pounced on by photographers when moving around the Birdcage areas. Accompanied by boyfriend Jake Wall, she looked gorgeous in her various designs on Derby, Cup & Oaks Days and was naturally a key figure for the Myer marquee, as she is their Golden Girl these days. She also took part in the judging for the Fashions On The Field.
The stylish and compact Longines marquee hosted several celebrities and saw guests indulge in a relaxed atmosphere. The guest list for the three days I was there included Kristy Hinze, Megan Gale, Michael and Lindy Klim, Gai Waterhouse and daughter Kate, Shelley Craft, Collette Dinnigan, and Martin and Michelle Walsh. The marquee had that silvery feel, synonymous with the watchmaker look, and left a good impression.
As was the case in previous years, the place where you wanted to let yourself loose and enjoy the great food and music was with Andrew McManus. The concert promoter hosted a dual-levelled marquee fitted out perfectly for those who wished to dance and sing away with the music. Particularly in the latter stages of the day, this marquee was where the action was happening. We saw international guest Patrizio Buanne sing along to “Viva Las Vegas”, whilst other international visitors included Christopher Cross, Rachel Hunter and Carson Kressley.
Others to kick their heels up included Kate Waterhouse, footballers Chris Judd, Marc Murphy, Brendan Fevola, and Jess Sinclair, rugby players Matt King, Willie Mason and Lote Tuqiri, Ralph Carr and fiancee Emma Gibson, Delta Goodrem, Jules Lund, Derryn Hinch, Tottie Goldsmith, Mick Doohan, Mark Pennell, Natasha Lum, Emma Gardner, Ferne Langford, David Rogers (from Challenge Cancer), Ann-Maree Cooksley, Drew Bellmaine, Tiffany Cherry, Emma Freedman, Jemma Gawned, Lauren Phillips, Georgia Sinclair and Dermott Brereton. Fiona Horne made it back to Australia with her American boyfriend and was glad to take part in the Carnival.
The hospitality in all the above-mentioned marquees was tremendous and great credit goes to all the staff and hosts associated with them.
One lasting thought was my chat to visiting British fashion designer Jeff Banks. He has been at the forefront of British fashion for over forty years and he told me it was “well overdue that he visited Melbourne for the VRC Spring Carnival”. His menswear and accessories are now stocked in Australia through Myer and we were chatting outside the Myer marquee when I asked him, “What is the most significant fashion trend you've seen in your time?” Just as we spoke an attractive young girl in a black mini dress walked past and Jeff said, “60s fashion - like that mini in front of us. Jean Shrimpton wore that in 1963 and the fashion of the 60s will always stay with us. Nobody can say that for the 80s and 90s. It is the 60s for me.”
Jeff was once married to famous singer Sandie Shaw. The recognition of this racing carnival is well endorsed by Jeff. “At Royal Ascot it is all about top hats and tails. Here, there is greater diversity and the people make a go of the fashion and dress up beautifully. I like it very much.” Jeff was a judge at Fashions On The Field - in the Design section - and thought “it was a bit of a mixed bag, but Australia has some terrific designers”.
He returns to Britain with great fondness of what he has seen in Melbourne and is now set to pitch for designing the clothing for the 2012 UK Olympic team.
