Australia’s champion swimmer, Ian Thorpe, a much-admired connoisseur of fashion and style, has launched his own men’s signature underwear brand. The new range will be sold exclusively through David Jones retail stores in Australia. Thorpe has created the underwear in partnership with leading Australian manufacturers, Mitch Dowd Design, whom he approached in late 2002 for this venture.

Ian’s manager, David Flaskas, said, “This is the first time that Ian has ventured into clothing design and the underwear range reflects the quality and styling delivered by Ian in, and out of, the pool.” Ian Thorpe stated, “It was exciting because while what we were doing design wise was unique and cutting edge, the ultimate test was the wearing of the garments – and I am confident in saying that the range certainly delivers.”

Ian was intimately involved in the full production of his underwear and applied the same passion to the design as to his training and performance – even designing the distinctive logo! Claire Cattanach of Mitch Dowd said, “Ian pushed construction techniques, fabrication and styling to a new level. He knew exactly what he wanted, and we explored the globe for performance driven fabrics designed to improve the comfort of the wearer. As an athlete Ian was fully aware of this importance.”

Ian Thorpe Underwear is to be sold exclusively through Australia’s leading fashion retailer, David Jones, and will retail in the “mid-range price point”, with pricing from $Aust 21.95 to $44.95. The range consists of three stories – Oxygen, Competitor, and Altitude – includes briefs, fitted trunks and more.
