Australian fashion icon Alex Perry stood out amongst the various activities during the recent L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival by having his own extravagant show at the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne. Labelled the ‘Cuban Princess’ runway show, this was fashion at its fully fledged best. Invited guests dressed up to the extent of seeing several Alex Perry designs in the audience, such was the excitement that was generated. I met several people who are ardent fans and were generally thrilled by the whole experience.
At Alex Perry's personal request, Megan Gale came out of catwalk retirement to open the show in gorgeous fashion. She received a great ovation. The collection, backed by a big musical production, was a forerunner to next year with part of Alex's 2011-2012 summer offerings. It was a change for him to showcase some brilliant colour, with turquoise, buttercup yellow, magenta and blood orange amongst the elegant evening gowns; several capturing a high, sporty neckline and simply fitted waists, and some with embroidered straps curling delicately. The evening glamour was offset by a series of smart day wear, comprising some crisp white suits, dresses in a pretty black and red floral print, and soft cream and pale gold dresses. The kimono-like collars on the tailored jackets were eye-catching. Overall, it was a classy affair of stunning style and sophistication.
The large audience were quite taken by each piece, making Alex Perry’s LMFF show a real winner and the highlight of the week. Great credit to all involved.
