By: Carmine Pascuzzi

Dean Tsopanis of BIBA salon in Forest Hill may have been crowned the 2013 American Crew FACE OFF Award Winner, but his work isn't over. For the first time, the men’s grooming competition (which began in Australia nine years ago) is going global, which will see Dean fly over to Los Angeles, California to compete in the international FACE OFF awards on January 31. Tsopanis will battle it out against winners from eight countries including the UK, USA and Canada.

Tsopanis’ classic and masculine entry impressed the Australian American Crew FACE OFF 2013 judging panel to win him the coveted title. He said, “I took my inspiration from images of James Dean and Elvis Presley. Their styles are classic, masculine and still cool after all these years. I wanted to create a look that was raw and that something any man could wear. To style the winning look I used the American Crew Forming Cream to give fullness and texture. It’s simple to use, washes out easily at the end of the day and smells awesome.”

American Crew celebrated the nation’s most talented men’s hair stylists and latest looks in grooming in Melbourne last November, announcing the winner of its 2013 FACE OFF Competition at a cocktail event held at Docklands. The Awards were led by GQ Editor in Chief, Nick Smith, and presenters included Mimi Galan from Arthur Galan AG, London Management’s Benji Hart and Culture magazine’s Hayley Miller.

The FACE OFF Competition was established here on our shores in 2005 by the world’s leading men’s grooming brand American Crew and has since caught the eye of men’s hair stylists worldwide. The Competition promotes the exceptional male grooming talent of salons and stylists across Australia. The 2013 event saw more than 600 black and white photographic entries submitted for the chance to win the career opportunity of a lifetime.

As part of his prize, Dean will also style shoots for GQ and Culture magazines as well being featured on the cover of the 2013 American Crew FACE OFF magazine. The global winner will win a trip to Madrid, Spain as a guest of American Crew, and will have the opportunity to work backstage at the American Crew 2013 collection show.

DEAN TSOPANIS WINS MEN’S HEALTH AWARD AT THE GLOBAL AMERICAN CREW FACE OFF COMPETITION

Dean Tsopanis of BIBA salon in Forrest Hill has returned to Australia a hairstyling hero, after taking out the coveted Men’s Health award in Los Angeles. 2013 marked the first year the competition (which began in Australia nine years ago) went global. As Australia’s winner, Dean travelled to Los Angeles, California to compete in the international American Crew FACE OFF awards on January 31. Tsopanis battled it out against five other global winners from Spain, Canada, USA, New Zealand and the UK – coming second overall.

The tough judging panel consisted of five esteemed judges, including American Crew creative director Craig Hanson, fashion and grooming editor at Men’s Health Sandra Nygaard, stylist Taylor Jacobson, photographer David Roemer, and Sergi Bancells Olmedo from Estetica – who deliberated for four hours before making their announcement.

Men’s Health was looking for a photo and hairstyle that embodied the Men’s Health man: masculine and rugged, sophisticated but not too fussy, approachable and authentic. Tsopanis’ style fitted this brief perfectly, seeing him be crowned the Men’s Health Award Winner.

“Dean’s look projected health and success, as well as style,” said Men’s Health Sandra Nygaard of Dean’s entry.

Pedro Jose from Spain took out the overall first prize.
