:: Spotlight :: Australian hairdressers collaborate to raise funds for the Haiti earthquake survivors

By: Carmine Pascuzzi

Celebrities, socialites and charitable Sydneysiders poured into People Hairdressing recently as the blow-dry marathon for Haiti occurred under the banner of BLOW-OFF - an alliance of hairdressers. The BLOW OFF alliance includes JAYNE WILD (Wild Life Hair), KENNETH STODDART (session stylist), HAMISH GLIANOS (People Hairdressing), PHILLIP GALLO (Gallo Hair), BARNEY MARTIN (Barney Martin Hairdressing), BRETT ALBURY (Suki Hair) and JULIANNE MCGUIGAN (Sable Hair). They offered $35 blowdrys and $135 haircuts to anyone that was interested with all proceeds going to the appeal.

First in line for a little pampering were celebrity guests Nikki Phillips, David Campbell, Emma Lung, Claudia Karvan, Laura Csortan, Maz Compton, Darren McMullen, Rebel Penfold-Russell and Mary Shackman who all booked weeks ago to assure their share of the smoothing and snipping that would be taking place for the earthquake-devastated island nation.

The BLOW OFF alliance, all of which are individually and highly-celebrated for their hairdressing skills, put industry competition aside to do something for those truly in desperate need. ALL proceeds from the BLOW OFF event go direct to Haiti via The Worldwide Orphans Foundation and WorldChild organisations. Funds will provide emergency relief in the form of food and water, shelter, sanitation and redevelopment efforts. Charity Director, Deborra-Lee Furness commented on the BLOW OFF initiative from New York saying:

“I can’t even imagine what it must be like to be an orphan in Haiti at this time of devastation. They need so much support and care and I am so happy to hear that the hairdressers in Australia are blowing up a storm together with WorldChild to raise funds for WWO Oz that will benefit so many kids who really need a helping hand.”

The vibe in the salon was loud and light-hearted as the blow dryers whirled and guests enjoyed treats including wine from Wild Oats, still-warm-from-the-oven cakes from Kawa and personal bowls of Baci chocolates on each station. Some 90 appointments were booked and an auction of desirable items including a rare one-off Tina Kalivas dress and artworks by Kelly and Stephanie Geddes took place to help raise additional monies for the cause.

Monies raised totalled almost $8,000 for the event, which is a great effort.

2010 will see more BLOW OFF events rolling out across the country for various charity appeals.
