The Runway 4 show of L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival was an eclectic mix of fabrics, textures and colours with leather, frills, rips and opaque tights all popular themes. Torn jeans and one sided dresses made a comeback and red no longer dominated, allowing for an explosion of maroon and deep purple, certainly the colours of the season.

NEVENKA launched the show and didn’t disappoint with flowing black gowns followed by an assortment of high waisted leather skirts and dresses teamed with sky high platforms. Sleek mini dresses featuring deep purple and maroon flowers and a shirt with balloon sleeves embraced this seasons flowing new shapes and textures.

An eye-catching, shimmering, sequin mini dress with fish scale detail flapping with the model’s strut announced the beginning of MANNING CARTELL’S offering. This season’s ballooning genie-style pants flowed in beautiful mauve. Frilly dresses, plaid pants and sequins sparkled with the favourite dress looking as though someone has ripped into it. Torn fabrics are another great trend in dresses and jeans this winter.

LISA HO embraced distinctly Eastern European influences with the use of real fur stoles and vests in blue shades. The theme continued with striking military jackets in navy. The bright red made famous on last season’s catwalks, made a brief appearance in a frilly, feminine dress. Other notable moments included an extremely long, grey evening dress and a tall purple evening dress with flowing layers and ruffles for plenty of texture.

THURLEY continued the frilly party frock theme with a pink ruffle dress teamed with black patterned tights. Thurley also reintroduced one sided ruffled dresses, and eye-popping dress with extremely low back and ruffles was a standout. Another inspiration was the clever use of yellow layered with black lace embracing the popularity of black this season teamed with splashes of bright primary colours this season.

ARABELLA RAMSEY burst onto the runway with a fresh white and red unfitted dress, followed by a smart red pea coat and plaid farmer’s style shirts teamed with fringed cowboy boots, Americana style. Refreshing white satin shirts with red checkered design were the standout fabric of the evening and torn jeans and shorts with plaid vests were also a standout.

By far the highlight of the evening was KATE SYLVESTER’S ballerina themed offering. A graceful ballerina wearing a micro tutu style skirt and thick white knitted tights led the show, followed by short frilly dresses and comfy ballerina style cardis in pink and white. The favourite and most wearable offering was a knitted grey dress teamed with white stockings, the perfect and interesting winter work alternative to black for every Melbourne girl.

GINGER AND SMART made a statement in puffy red and white jackets, ponchos and big coats teamed with cute little hats and big black bags. The tartan winter-wear made an interesting contrast with a delicate silk offering namely the breathtaking ethereal flowing silk Grecian style dress.

Melbourne label OBUS made a statement with a gilded peacock feather theme accesorised with a 70s colour palette of the mustard, blue, orange and green opaque tights, that are so popular this season.

This evening was an enthralling halfway mark for the fashion festival and big supporters David Jones and Myer were no doubt satisfied with this celebration of style, glamour and creativity.
