By: Carmine Pascuzzi

Mercedes Australian Fashion Week (MAFW) descends on Melbourne this October with the Autumn Winter 2006 Collections taking centre stage during the period October 24-28, and showcases the first glimpse of the season.

The eagerly anticipated Asia Pacific Fashion Forum (APFF), a highlight of MAFW this season, will run from Monday, October 24 to Tuesday, October 25 and MAFW’s official collection show schedule and exhibition kick starts from Wednesday, October 26 to Friday, October 28, as part of the international buying circuit. The event is timed to enable first winter deliveries in store for early 2006 and the trans-seasonal nature of many of the collections featured also ensures relevance to European and North American markets.

Staged once again at Melbourne’s Federation Square, the contemporary surrounds of the renowned site has inspired an entirely new offering of collection show venues and technical infrastructure. This includes high-tech lighting capability and creative production spaces that utilises Champions, The Atrium and The Edge facilities. The APFF will take place in the ACMI Theatre.

The first official event for the week is the Asia Pacific Fashion Forum. It is set to become an annual event that will help fashion-related businesses gain greater insights into opportunities for local and international brand development. The two-day forum presents a series of keynote speakers including; Jay McIntosh - America’s Director of Retail & Consumer Products Ernst & Young, Bonnie Brooks - President of Lane Crawford, Richard Tyler - Designer and Founder of Richard Tyler, Alfred Chan - CEO and Managing Director Ports Design Ltd, Mark Neuman - International Trade and Government Affairs Councel Limited Brands, Richard Martin - Managing Director IMA Asia, Hung Huang - CEO China Interactive Media Group, Raphael le Masne de Chermont - Chairman of Shanghai Tang plus representatives from Australian Wool Innovators, DHL Asia Pacific, The Victorian Government, and Austrade.

Opening the MAFW Collection Show Schedule on the morning of October 26 is the internationally acclaimed design duo Easton Pearson. The schedule of shows will also feature a number of established designers including Wayne Cooper, Charlie Brown, Camilla & Marc, and Josh Goot alongside emerging talents such as Caravana and Mjolk, just to name a few. In addition there will be three ready-to-wear group collection shows, the new generation group collection show, and the debut of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology’s (RMIT) fashion degree graduates. The Source @ MAFW exhibition has evolved even further and remains the breeding ground to discover new talent.
