************************************************************************ **Review - MMSFW 2007 Object of Desire - by Sarah Willcocks** Michi Girl presented the long-anticipated last parade of the 2007 Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. Promising “objects of beauty with a razor sharp contemporary edge” the runway played host to some of Australia’s cult design favourites. Gorman began the parade with easy-going, relaxed ensembles that were crying out for mimicry during a carefree Spring. That perennial classic, the plain tee in basic white and soft grey, was paired with clean, higher-rising denim in retro washes to create an effortless daytime look. Heralding the start of spring the label strung miniature posies in bloom around the model’s lithe necks. Very on-trend metallics, in leggings and crop jackets, were balanced out by raw, earthy materials in natural colours. This welcome clashing of the technological and the more organic may be inspired by Lisa Gorman’s own bid to save the world – her label aims to be carbon neutral by next year. They contend that we wasteful Aussies are spending $1.56 billion each year on clothing that we never even wear. Luckily Gorman ensures you will want to wear the heck out of this collection which finished up displaying modern, hexagon graphics that featured on dresses, tees and tunics. Alice McCall’s “Welcome to the Dollhouse” collection delivered understated fluoro (an oxymoron if there ever was one) in yellow detailing paired with muted greys – a more subtle way to wear the extroverted trend. McCall persists with foisting high-waisted short shorts upon us but the range also includes a pocketed, white dress with just enough black piping detail to keep things interesting (and to make it one of the most covetable pieces of the season for minimalists). A demure blossom print with yellow, black and white petals overlaying a grey background was a winner as was the refreshing injection of a buttery lemon hue for some springtime colour. Inspired by Bladerunner, Jessie Hill’s “Broken Windows” collection was both delicate and sharp at once. A cool white on white look was pulled off well several times throughout with a silky, lightweight hooded jacket a standout piece. Fabrics were embellished with either clusters of peek-a-boo transparent spots, black rosettes or all-encompassing, disco style sparkle. A dramatic finale piece came in the form of a regal, oversized flip-up collar on a black mini dress. Shakuhachi also did the shiny, shiny disco ball thing with a lifetime supply of sequined beading on several incarnations of the mini dress that were unrestrained attention seekers. An off the shoulder, zip-up dress in, what else but, hot pink also demanded attention in figure hugging 80’s fashion. The label also showed off the relatively wallflower-like side of their personality with a few pretty dresses in watered down lilac and pale scrawling prints. Kirrily Johnston’s latest offerings played with new shapes and volume at the shoulders. The pieces gave off an armour-like vibe with press studs, vast metallic belts to cinch in maxi dresses and some gladiatorial sandals to teeter on top of. Vibrant lime green and electric yellow made a summery citrus impact; particularly on a show stopping one-shouldered green column dress with bronze accents at the neckline. It’s a look that sadly won’t suit everyone but good luck to the Amazonian women who are brave enough to get away with it. Rounding out the parade was Life with Bird with an on-song collection in current lemon, grey white and silver. The pieces were racy and sporty with the label providing us with a choice of going either the mini or maxi dress routes. Metallics were featured in almost every casual yet glamorous piece - the only problem is whether to wear them day, night or simply all summer long.
*************************************************************** **Spring Fashion Stable Lunch** On Wednesday, September 5, 2007, the Australian Racing Museum (ARM) hosted ‘The Spring Fashion Stable Lunch’ - an exclusive ‘soirée’ featuring the who’s who of racing & fashion circles. Held during the Motorola Melbourne Spring Fashion Week at Champions, Federation Square, guests were entertained by the soothing voice of Gorgi Quill and there were a number of celebrity faces who enjoyed lunch, including Brodie Harper, Esther Anderson, Rob Mills, Michelle Stamper, Peter Jago, and Emma Feedman. Guests were able to bid on an exciting auction, for the chance to purchase a ‘one off ’exclusively designed Alannah Hill rocking horse. This decadent piece has been hand painted in an exquisite 1930’s carousel design and all proceeds go towards the ARM’s preservation of fashion throughout the years. Gorgeous Cosmetics presented the ‘Powder Room’, where you could check out Spring’s hottest ‘hues’ and how to best apply your Spring racing ‘face’. All guests were also treated to the ultimate ‘must have’ racing survival goodie box.
****************************************************** **Review - MMSFW 2007 The Looking Glass** It was a night of elegance with several classy designers on show. Christine opened with a selection of cocktail frocks perfect for the Spring look; amongst them being shades of black and white and even elegant kaftans, perfect for the poolside. There were also patterned pieces and flowing skirts that set the scene for the rest of the parade. Aurelio Costarella continues to exude beautifully structured designs and his intricate detailing shone through gloriously, mainly by way of a series of white floor length gowns. The floaty skirts and lace detailing were well demonstrated and the presentation oozed sophistication. One of the picks of the week was the collection by Nevenka. Stylish florals and shades were part of the floaty fabrics on show. Gorgeous colours and patterns caught the eye of the audience as maxi-dresses gave way to flirty party frocks. Aquas and purples came into their own as the designer brought extra colour and dimension. Also impressive was Husk. Bold features with crumpled minis and sleeker options like metallic silver leggings and cropped jackets. Very feminine and with some edge and attitude, it was all well detailed and vibrant. Striking evening wear makred the spot for Jayson Brunsdon who displayed classic strapless, halter and off the shoulder styles. There were lots of satin and shimmery sequin detailing but was much more casual than usual. Anna Thomas gave a hint of the 1940s/1950s style, comprising tailored blazers and cute dresses spattered with polka dots and thick stripes. Full skirts were accompanied by masculine looking shoes. Blazers were shown with very short shorts while other outfits included pretty knee-length dresses.
****************************************************** **Review - MMSFW 2007 Style Wars** The Style Wars runway show provided a night of where experimental looks took hold of the Melbourne Town Hall as some of the country's creative and dramatic labels showed their wares. TV kicked off the proceedings with girls clad in copper-red jumpsuits, a good change from the gold and silver we'd usually see. Dresses with vertical pleat detail gave way to simple shifts and tanks in a black and white pattern. A number of bright yellow outfits look sure to be winners too. The tough girl look was also interesting - tight black pants, cutout tanks and zipper detail. The TV collection was certainly different and attention-grabbing. Alpha 60 displayed worthy street style with tee-shirts and loose tunic dresses. They continue to do what they do best with simple and effective designs. The accessorising was very good too, with black day-gloves and printed bags. Claude Maus continues to offer something cohesive in the ever-evolving fantasy themes they produce from season to season. For the men's most notable were the leggings, skinny pants and jeans, and cool jackets. The women's collection included some great detailing in the way pieces tied, draped and moved. The colour palette didn't stray far from black and grey it all worked well. Kate Hurst’s collection of pretty feminine pieces were well-received as some of the most wearable of the night. The collection comprised simple floral print dresses and blouses. The cropped leather jacket was noteworthy, as well as several cute, wearable mini-dresses. Ruffles were again prominent as with the biker-chic leathers and zips. Friedrich Gray’s fast-paced showing was quite an assault with thumping music overpowering the garments on show. But it was a cool display with vests and hoods for the guys and girls could gasp over the sexy sheer tops layered over barely-wearable singlets. Romance Was Born did mix a fair proportion of the wearable with the artistic this time around, from high-waisted jeans to the floaty printed dress. It was generally a collection that probably created a lasting impact as they used stonewash denim and a huge variety of textures and colours. Tight pants and loose tops were evident and the edgy metaliic gold and silver pieces were well represented. Models wearing plain white masks marked the presence by Material Boy, loose, oversized tanks were shown in a variety of colours and prints. There was even a matching short and shirt set complete with patterned trim that was typical of the label's out-there nature.
