Q & A

Q. What is your family background?

A. My heritage is Irish, German, Russian and Cherokee Indian! But I was born and raised in a small town in the mountains of North Carolina, United States.

Q. Did you grow up in your early teens wanting to be a model?

A. Actually, no! I've danced since I was three years old, so I always wanted to be a dancer. Then I went to University for Psychology with a minor in Studio Art and Photography, and I started modelling to learn more about photography! Then modelling turned out to be my career.

Q. What have you discovered / learnt from the modelling scene?

A. Rejection has taught me humility and inner-strength. Success has taught me perseverance and self-worth. And travelling has taught me to be endlessly adventurous, to be open-minded and compassionate in embracing my surroundings, and - perhaps most importantly - to be brave. I could tell you about all the ways the modelling industry has broken me down, but all of those stories have made me stronger. As ugly and harsh and the modelling scene can be, it has made me everything I am, and I feel I may owe it some gratitude for that.

Q. Career highlights to date?

A. Working for GUESS in Spain, walking in New York Fashion Week, being featured by Esquire, GQ and Sports Illustrated, and a very long list of jobs that have taken me to some of the most beautiful parts of the world - parts I never would have seen otherwise.

Q. Favourite hobbies?

A. Reading is at the top of my list, I have a book (or 2 or 5) with me everywhere I go. Then, of course, dancing will always be a passion of mine.

Q. Favourite music?

A. Rock and Roll baby!! My brother is the lead singer of the Heavy Metal band, Kairos! So Rock will always be my favourite, but I also love jazz and blues and trance, basically anything at all that has a beat I can dance to.

Q. Favourite films?

A. Pride and Prejudice is my favourite, then Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey Jr. They're also some of my favourite books, so that could have a little something to do with it. I also love all the X-Men and Hobbit movies. I'm a bit of a nerd at heart, if you haven't noticed.

Q. Beauty tips?

A. Since I've been living here in Australia and working with an amazing Health and Wellness company based in the Whitsundays, I've learned so much about the things that truly benefit my body. I drink a superfood shake every morning now, packed with plants, roots, seeds, berries and beans that cleanse, protect and rejuvenate. Then, one of the best things of living in Sydney is that everything is pretty much walking distance, so I try and walk almost everywhere as my exercise. And as far as skin goes, roses are apparently a miraculous ingredient in skincare products! Miranda Kerr (who also happens to be my favourite model) has a beautiful rose hip oil in her skincare line Kora that I try to use every day.

Q. What is your fashion sense?

A. Total bohemian. I have to be comfortable, so my outfit of choice pretty much every day is flowing sundresses and bare feet! I have this fascination with gypsies, so I think my style is very gypsy-inspired.

Q. What do you feel sexiest wearing?

A. Well, naturally, lingerie! But growing up as a little goth girl in high school, I always feel sexiest in corsets.

Q. Advice for young girls aspiring to be models?

A. Let everything the industry says to you flow over you like water. If it's useful advice or constructive criticism, then keep it with you, and perhaps it could make you a stronger model. But if what they say is hurtful, let it wash over you like a wave then let it go. Only you know what you are capable of, so always believe in that and don't let anyone take it away from you.

Q. What's the craziest thing that you've done?

A. Last year I competed in King of the Hunter - one of Australia's biggest off-road competitions! Didn't win, unfortunately, we got third place due to some mechanical issues, but we still got the second fastest lap-time! That was definitely the craziest thing I've ever done.

Q. What's the funniest pick up line you've encountered?

A. Haha, the one that got my attention most was: There's 21 letters in the alphabet, right? Oh…. I forgot - U - R - A - Q T He was an Australian.

Q. Favourite place visited?

A. Barcelona is my favourite place in the world. I've lived there three times for modelling and there's no other place in the world that holds my heart like Barcelona does. It's the people and their appreciation of art and family and love, the breathtaking architecture, the live music on every street corner and in every bar, and of course the beach. I lived there for the first time about three years ago, and have travelled countless places since. And I must add, the only other place in the world that has ever come close to competing for “my favourite place in the world” is Australia.

Q. Do you have a role model/s?

A. I mentioned her earlier, but Miranda Kerr has always been my biggest role model. She just seems to have everything about life and health and beauty figured out, yet still seems so humble and appreciative of everything she achieves.

Q. People you've admired generally?

A. My very first role model was actually Amy Lee, lead singer of the rock band Evanescence. I first heard them when I was twelve years old, shy and awkward and always anxious, and seeing Amy Lee as such a strong, expressive woman, not afraid of what people thought of her, gave me a lot of courage and self-confidence.

Q. Future ambitions?

A. Well of course I have my modelling goals, Victoria's Secret Angel, Vogue, etc… But my biggest goals in life actually involve travelling the world. I want to go snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, explore the Amazon rain forest, swim with sharks in South Africa, learn to fire-dance in Thailand!! The list goes on forever.
