:: Spotlight :: Model Profile - Dani May

By: Carmine Pascuzzi

Talented model Dani May resides in West Seattle, Washington - a small town just outside Emerald City. Dani is originally from a small town nestled in the Sierra Nevada Foothills, called Grass Valley, California. Her desire for modelling started around the age of three, wearing her mother’s lipstick, costume jewellery and high heel shoes. Later she set up fashion shows with her friends using clothing put together from the local thrift store. When Dani got her first job as a horse trainer in the show industry she never stopped practising her walk, even if it was strutting her stuff down the barn aisle for her furry friends. She has therefore had a constant love for the fashion and modelling industries. Her first experience with modelling was for Easy Rider Magazine when aged nineteen. Later she was featured in several equestrian magazines including “Cowboys and Indians” and “The Morgan horse”. Dani has that x-factor, the charisma that not many young models possess, and it is a pleasure to feature her in this special profile.

Q. What is your family background?

A. My Mamma is French Spanish and Native American, and my Daddy is a full blooded Irishman. I have one older sister, who is four years older than me, and I grew up notoriously as the black sheep of the family.

Q. Did you grow up in your early teens wanting to be a model?

A. I can remember wanting to be a model for as long as I can remember. Although I grew up very poor, my parents were always good at improvising. My daddy was a salesman, so we had a lot of cardboard in which he spray painted red and made me my very own catwalk. My Mamma would get clothing from the thrift store and once a week I would invite my girlfriends over and we would design our own clothes with staples, tacky glue and safety pins, and strut our stuff on that cardboard catwalk!

Q. What have you discovered / learnt from the modelling scene?

A. When I moved to the Emerald City (Seattle, WA) to pursue the dream of becoming a model, I pictured everything that I had seen through reality television. I soon found out that the models they portray on TV are not necessarily the ones you find in real life. I have found the modelling industry heartwarming and everyone within the fashion industry quickly became my friend and the catwalk my second home. Although like every job there's always that one bad apple.

Q. Career highlights to date?

A. In this year alone I have been featured in four music videos, one commercial, had my first singing debut in front of several hundred people, Go Go danced at one of the largest public venues in Seattle for Halloween, had a runway show almost every weekend, and recently had the amazing opportunity to fly down to Los Angeles CA and walk in the second largest fashion show in the United States, LA fashion week.

Q. Favourite hobbies?

A. My favourite hobby would definitely be spending time with my best friend of eleven years, my American Morgan Horse, Solitaire, in which I named after the diamond for she is my one and only. You can either find me at a show or in the barn, and as I say, going from heals up to heals down!

Q. Favourite music?

A. As far as my favourite music is concerned, I would have to say - rock! For I am also a KISW 99.9 Rock Girl, the #1 rock station in the northwest. Although, every now and then I have to throw on my cowgirl hat, my boots, get a little down and dirty to some boot scoot and boogie Country!

Q. Favourite films?

A. My all time favourite films would have to be, for Romance: The Notebook, or Natural Born Killers, depends on my mood. Comedy: Harold and Kumar go to White Castle and Dirty Love. Horror: House of a Thousand Corpses, 'cause after all, it is a Rob Zombie film.

Q. What is your fashion sense?

A. My fashion sense is all over the board. I certainly find it very difficult to choose between my large collection of 6 inch heels and my favourite pair of cowgirl boots. In the summer you will find me with my Daisy Dukes, Cowgirl Boots, Bikini top and braided pigtails. In the winter, you will find me in a sweater dress leather boots above my knees, my favourite leather jacket and red scarf around my neck. Although if you walk into my closet, you will find an abundance of cocktail dresses in every colour in the rainbow.

Q. Beauty tips?

A. My best advice I can give for women and men for beauty tips is that you are only as beautiful as you feel. Let your personality shine and your smile will always be your most beautiful feature. However, I never leave the house without at least my lip gloss, mascara and blush brush.

Q. Advice for young girls aspiring to be models?

A. My advice for aspiring models, at any age, is to be aware of your own self image. How do you want to be portrayed, how do you see yourself, and how do you want others to view you? Always bring somebody with you, if you do not know the photographer, or at least let somebody know that you trust, the address of where you will be going. In this industry, the most important thing to remember is to have fun, be yourself, lead by example and set your standards high! Believe in yourself, and your dreams will come true. (even if it's just for fun).

Q. Do you think a man should treat a woman like he does his car?

A. Depends on the car. Call me old school, but I believe that a man should always open the door for his lady. He should always treat her with patience, kindness and a gentle touch. That is why you are called gentlemen, after all!

Q. Favourite place visited?

A. Ooh, this one's a hard one. I have been fortunate enough to travel to France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Greece, Turkey, Canada, Scotland, but I have to say my favourite place has been Belize! I loved the white sandy beaches, the ocean that seemed to go on to infinity, the natives, palm trees and warm water and all the amazing life forms within it!

Q. Do you have a role model/s?

A. My largest role model in my life has been my Memere (Grandmother). She survived WWII, fell in love with an American soldier, and came to the US to start a family, overcoming unbelievably horrific obstacles. She showed me strength, endurance, gratitude, loyalty and above all showed me how to love and be loved in return.

Q. People you've admired generally?

A. People I have admired throughout my career have been Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo, Betty Page, Heidi Klum, Tyra Banks and Holly Madison.

Q. Future ambitions?

A. My future ambitions include walking at Bryant Park in NY Fashion Week, as well as London, Paris and Milan. I wish to indulge myself in the wonders of that the world has to offer. I am super excited to be working on my first album, and will be spending time in a recording studio shortly and hope to one day be able to own an equestrian facility in which I can open to the public to help people and horses be who they always dreamed of being…a place of sanctuary. I will call it “Dani's Green Stables”.
