In this exhibition, Paris Kyne Master Milliner promotes couture millinery and explains how it is designed and constructed. The exhibition will show seven especially constructed pieces designed and made by Master Milliner Paris Kyne with their wooden hats blocks next to them. Accompanying each piece will be a description of how it was designed and constructed, also listed will be the origins of each material used and the history of each hat block. The viewer will discover how traditional materials and methods are employed today in couture millinery. Paris said, “With every product that is designed, the elements and principals of design should be taken into consideration. In this exhibition we not only take them into consideration, but we celebrate them. For example ‘A Study of Value’ is a black and white wirework piece covered in vintage petti pearl Swiss straw braid. The wirework frame has been made twice, once in black and once in white, with the black one sitting a little behind and slightly to the right of the white. This gives the viewer the opportunity to see the echo of the first in the second. ‘A Study of Line’ is the largest piece I have ever made, and that is saying something. It is a silver sinamay coolie with horizontal stripes of gold and silver lurex crinoline on its edge. This hat is about one and a half meters wide, (perfect for a quite day at the races) and took about 32 hours to construct. I have wished to stage an exhibition for years that shows a finished hat, with the block that it has been made on. Yet every time I start out on this journey, it morphs into something else. Like last year‘s 'Mould & Shape’ staged at MARs Gallery, which looked at the creative process of millinery, though mainly viewed through the photographers lens. I have Australia's largest hat block collection (currently at 724 pieces), some amazing, some very fashionable and others completely bizarre and parses. In this exhibition we explore how a wooden block is used as the base for building couture millinery. The hat block collection includes pieces that have once belonged Ann Austin, Thomas Harrison, Ronald Bernard, William Beale (Mr Individual), Frederick Fox and even two from The Tivolli Theatre.” Paris studied fashion and millinery in London and received his technical knowledge and sound manufacturing skills working in Australia for the late internationally, beloved, celebrity milliner William Beale. Paris’ creations have adorned celebrities, including Paris and Nicky Hilton, Tara Moss, Melissa George, Marcia Hines and the amazing Kate Ceberano and Molly Meldrum. Paris himself can be described as an art piece. As a self-described “fashion adjudicator”, Paris is well known in Melbourne for his endless energy and sometimes surprising wardrobe. He often serves as a television commentator for fashion and social events. Paris's favourite quote of the moment is, “More is more this season, less is so last year." This exhibition celebrates the elements of design which sadly “seams” to be missing in a large amount of mass produced fashion at this present time. This event is proudly supporting the McGrath Foundation. Tickets are just $20 + booking fee - available here ********************************************************* **Opening Night party** MSFW 2010 kicked off with a glamorous celebration party with many sexily dressed up, well presented speeches, lots of champagne and nibbles, great company, and all in an underground car park in the centre of Melbourne at Russell Place. That's what makes Melbourne very unique and stylish - the ability to make an impact from any situation. Channel Seven news presenter Rebecca Maddern MC'd the event and opened proceedings by thanking all the sponsors and special guests, before the Lord Mayor, Robert Doyle, again displayed his pride in talking up the city and its specialties, particularly when it comes to MSFW - one of the best weeks of the year. The lovely Lucy McIntosh, the Face of MSFW, spoke very well in describing what MSFW means to her and the people of Melbourne. Also in attendance was the charismatic DJ Poet (Lucy's fiance), having just wrapped up the Canadian leg of the Black Eyes Peas tour. It was good to catch up with him and he was very much looking forward to three weeks in Australia and support Lucy during MSFW. Other guests included Arthur Galan, Richard Nylon, Gwendolynne Burkin, Natasha Cunningham, Mia Greeves, Stephen Bucknall, Dan Zizys, Matthew Anderson, Rhys Ulrich, Paris Kyne, and Karen Webster. Melbourne has a lot to offer for the fashion conscious and much will be revealed during MSFW - August 30 to September 5, 2010. Here are pictures from the Opening Night.
*************************************************** **VRC Spring Fashion Lunch at Flemington** Melbourne had a taste of what to expect in the coming Spring fashion season when the VRC hosted the annual Spring Fashion Lunch at the Atrium at Flemington Racecourse. It was an opportunity for many fine looking ladies to dress up in a prelude to the upcoming 150th Melbourne Cup racing celebrations. Rebecca Maddern MC'd the event and amongst the guests were Myer ambassadors Rebecca Twigley and Kris Smith, Lucy McIntosh and her fiancé DJ Poet, VRC spring racing ambassadors Nick and Rachel Holland, designers Lisa Barron and Richard Nylon, and entertainment was provided by Jon Stevens and cast members of the musical Fame. Myer staged a fashion parade with its labels bringing the spring feeling to the occasion. Rachel Holland commented, “The romantic, feminine look is in for spring and black & white will be bigger than ever for Derby Day.” The main highlight of the afternoon was a moving five-minute video which captured the essence of why the Melbourne Cup is an iconic symbol of Melbourne culture. One could not have captured the emotion surrounding the history of the great race better than this - from the great horses like Phar Lap and Carbine to recent champions like Makybe Diva and the special moment when Damien Oliver won on Media Puzzle and saluted the sky in tribute to his late brother who passed away only days earlier. ********************************************************** **Lisa Barron Laneway Runway** Lisa Barron presented her exclusive 2010/2011 Spring/Summer Collection in the unique laneway at the rear of Collins234 - Boutique Place. Howey Place laneway was transformed into an international runway setting to reveal Lisa's spectacular vision for the new season. The show was one of the best I've seen from Lisa. Her gorgeous evening and cocktail wear was immaculate, with quality tailoring. Lisa received great acclaim on the night for her gowns which will pave the way for plenty of eye-catching attention during Melbourne's Spring Racing Carnival. She has the knack of creating the perfect fit for the right occasion. The event was hosted by the lovely Lauren Brain, from radio Nova, and the parade marked the modelling debut of Isabella Caruso, Lisa's daughter, who has just signed with Chadwicks Models. So, it was a real family affair. And we got a taste of real glamour in the beautiful collection. Lisa Barron's store is at 234 Collins Street Pictures from the event by Matt Deller.
