:: Spotlight :: 2010 Rosemount Australian Fashion Week - Fashion Trends

By: Carmine Pascuzzi

Rosemount Australian Fashion Week (RAFW) Spring Summer 2010/11 will take place from May 3-7, 2010 against the spectacular backdrop of Circular Quay. A selection of Australia and the Asia Pacific’s best designers will present their collections to some of the world’s most significant members of the fashion industry.

RAFW is an exclusive industry-only event, made accessible to registered buyers, agents, media, stylists and other fashion industry representatives. The five day official schedule features designers in on-site and off-site Collection Shows, Emerge, The MCA and the Westin Sydney Suites. This year celebrates fifteen years of Australian Fashion Week.

IMG Fashion celebrated the launch of the RAFW 2010 program with the opening of the Frock Stars exhibition at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum. The Frock Stars event took hundreds of leading designers and fashion industry experts behind the scenes at Australian Fashion Week – going as far back as its first show in 1996. Some of the best outfits from the past fifteen years, exclusive footage, live studio re-creations and even a vault of the extremely colourful invitations provided more than just a trip down memory lane.

This season’s Spring Summer Collections will showcase more than 100 designers in 45 Collection Shows, over 50 accessory designers in Emerge and over 40 designer collections available for viewing at The MCA Showrooms and The Westin Sydney Suites.

For the fourth consecutive year, Redken 5th Avenue NYC will be the official hair partner of Rosemount Australia Fashion Week with a line up of almost 30 shows and a team of leading stylists from across the country.

**RAFW In A Week**

Rosemount Australian Fashion Week (RAFW) is over for another year. Congratulations to IMG for all their hard work which resulted in a fantastic week. The Overseas Passenger Terminal (OPT) at Circular Quay, Sydney had a week of non-stop fashion with fashionistas crowding the location waiting for shows to commence.

This year had a variety of different shows, styles and events. Main designers opting for off-site locations included Alex Perry, Dion Lee, Romance was Born, Ellery, Ksubi, Camilla and Marc and Lisa Ho.

Opening the RAFW was Lisa Ho at an off site location and Ginger and Smart starting the collections at the OPT. Closing RAFW was Ksubi at an off site location and closing the collections at OPT was fashion label Hussy. Attending over 20 shows I was fortunate enough to sit front row at a few of my favourite designers on behalf of my celebrity clientèle. So many international buyers were impressed with this year’s designs.

For a show stopping collection look no further than Kaftan queen Camilla. Her Babylon collection was based on the movie Avatar. Characters from the theme emerged down the runway opening the show. Staying true to her brand the amazing collection did not stop coming out. Each piece was a showstopper, brightly coloured parrot inspired colours to earthy tones. Prints included jungle, reptile ensembles. Models wore feathered Perspex visors. Camilla finished the show with a remarkable walk down the runway. The vibrant vivacious gorgeous lady was extremely proud of her hard work. More designers should consider doing this. Camilla definitely made her mark at RAFW and one to remember. The gift bags included the DVD and CD of Avatar and a beautiful Camilla inspired scarf and other little goodies. The only difficult task is which Kaftan do I choose??

Stand out design has to go to young Dion Lee. This creative talented designer pushed the trend this year with his strong silhouette geometrical lines and monochromatic palettes. This young man has a bright future ahead after only finishing TAFE 2 years ago. Buyers were frantic to get their hands on Dion Lee’s collection. It won’t be long before Dion Lee will be showing his collections in Paris. Congratulations to Dion. What a breathtaking collection!

Little Joe by Gail Elliott showed wonderful new designs. Her new collection was very impressive and very feminine. Not to mention the Jimmy Choo shoes styled with the garments. It was nice to see designer Gail Elliot close the show walking to the end of the runway. It must have brought a lot of modeling memories for her.

Nookie took the stage and models had fun on the runway. New impressive brightly coloured designs from Nookie made it feel like summer is here already. Sheer long belted capes gave a new look and a new ready to wear trend. The gift bag was full of surprises; one worth having.

Two designers to look out for in the future are Christopher Esber and Friedrich Gray who had impressive designs in their collections. They were definite stand outs. Their style relates to Dion Lee. Bianca Spender’s collection was divine with a cobalt blue hue standing out from the rest. The flowing Grecian style designs flowed nicely whilst feathered eyebrows on the models created a different approach.

Easy to wear went to Alice McCall and Jayson Brunsdon. Their beach type collection was easy to wear straight off the runway pieces. Many garments shown were easily matched to combining separates in your wardrobe. It was a fresh and modern collection allowing any woman to wear these designs with confidence.

I will make a quick mention to Rachel Gilbert and Gary Yang. Both impressed with their designs. The best gift bag of the week goes to Rachel Gilbert’s collection. It contained worthwhile treats that were very well thought out and generous.

Alex Perry’s collection paid more attention to the star power he had as guests. There were a few disappointments with certain designers. However, the most creative has to go to ‘Romance Was Born’. The creative flair was above and beyond and totally theatrical. Some garments are not wearable in public yet great to watch in this collection.

So many A-list guests attended each show. Kate Waterhouse looked ravishing each show wearing her favourite designer Willow, and you can not go past stunning, gorgeous Jennifer Hawkins making an impact on her beauty. April Rose Pengilly looking fashionable and Terry Biviano always looking immaculate. Lara Bingle looking frazzled at times trying to keep low key in the public eye. Alyssa Sutherland shone amongst the runway whilst gorgeous indigenous model Samantha Harris took charge.

Outside the shows were stalls of new products emerging into the fashion world. Jaime Wright’s shoes had the most popular stall. Jaime’s shoe collection are glamorous. They elongate the leg and fit perfectly on the foot. The best part is you can wear these heels all day long and not suffer from sore feet.

The most interesting action was in the Rosemount Bar before and after a collection. The wines pouring smoothly with the bar staff doing an amazing job and the vodkas came out at night. This was the best place to meet and greet and unwind during the day/night collections.

**Harper’s Bazaar and Blackberry RAFW Event**

Blackberry and Harpers Bazaar joined forces to celebrate the new white Blackberry smartphone during RAFW. The event was held at the new nightspot Beach Haus at Potts Point.

Guests included: Lara Bingle, Laura Csortan, Firass Durani, Camilla Freeman-Topper & Marc Freeman, Lizzy Lovett, Terry Biviano and Aurelio Costarella. The guests all looked spectacular, dressed in gorgeous designer wear garments. The main feature of the night was the open bar and it didn’t take long for the guests to kick off their heels and dance to the to the DJ tunes.

Flowing amongst the crowd were the non stop delicious cocktails made of Russian Standard Vodka mixed with gelatissimo’s lemon sorbet. A few canapés were handed out, finished with mini gelatissimo’s ice creams. Giant Screens in the background showed clips of behind the scenes of Harper’s Bazaar latest cover shoot.

Guests left a little disappointed expecting a new white blackberry to road test. Overall the night was a success and everyone looked like they were enjoying the event.

**Nookie ‘Let Love Rule’ after-party**

After Nookie’s brilliant designs on the runway for RAFW came the after-party. Designer Nikita Sernack hosted one of the biggest after party events of the week during RAFW. Held at the Ivy Pool Club, over 200 guests attended.

Fashion magazines, insiders and fashionistas filled the cold chilly outdoor pool area. It was unfortunate from a warm sunny day, a snow chilled breeze swept through during the after-party. Guests put on brave faces whilst standing outdoors in the chilly air. The cocktails, wines and spirits were flowing and guests were not short of a drink. The atmosphere was vibrant and alive and the crowd was in high spirits enjoying themselves, exactly what we needed after a hectic day of shows. The non stop flowing of drinks helped keep guests fulfilled and warm.

**Billion Dollar Babes**

Billion Dollar Babes showcased their 2010 spring/ summer collection (under the theme “Dreamcatcher”) at the Ivy Pool. The dreary weather did not stop the show. The Ivy Pool surrounds was a fantastic venue for use as a runway. Models paraded around the pool and all could see the garments clearly and closely. Guests snuggled on the lounges sipping on watermelon cocktails.

The collection was a hit with well designed and unusual pieces. Leaf like cut outs with under-toned lining was the feature stand out look and oversized tops and shorts were a hit. Maxi jersey dresses came out in different designs and colours styled with divine head pieces designed by amazing milliner Suzy O Rourke. The two finale maxi dresses sparkled with delight, the first one of silver sequins and last of gold sequins.

Dreamcatcher is the perfect name for the Billion Dollar Babes spring summer collection. A boho sophisticated chic look; one you must have this summer.
