:: Spotlight :: Stonnington Fashion Hall Of Fame 2009By: Carmine Pascuzzi
Two of Melbourne’s fashion icons, who epitomise the industry’s past and future, will be inducted into this year’s prestigious Stonnington Fashion Hall of Fame. The Stonnington Fashion Hall of Fame Gala on October 8, which will feature a runway parade showcasing design talents emerging from Stonnington’s fashion precincts, will celebrate the achievements of fashion pioneer Joe Sillitto and renowned local designer Teresa Liano. Stonnington Mayor, Cr Claude Ullin said the Hall of Fame, which began in 2001, boasted amongst its inductees a veritable who’s who of Melbourne fashion, including Joe Saba, Perri Cutten, Craig Kimberley, Lisa Barron, Jenny Hoo, Jenny Bannister, Alannah Hill, John Cavill, Adele Palmer and milliner, Paris Kyne. Cr Ullin added, “Over more than 25 years, Stonnington’s four fashion precincts – Toorak Road South Yarra, Chapel Street Precinct, High Street and Toorak Village – have clearly taken the mantle as Melbourne’s fashion capitals. This year’s inductees have been pivotal in building our City’s reputation for style – Joe Sillitto as a founding father and Teresa Liano who has made an indelible mark on the Melbourne fashion scene since Joe gave her a start in the ‘70s. Stonnington’s fashion industry underpins the city’s livability and economic strength and so, as a Council, it is important to recognise and celebrate this great attribute and the people who contribute to it through events such as the Hall of Fame." Stonnington Fashion Hall of Fame inductee, Teresa Liano, said it was an honour to be inducted. “My life has revolved around Stonnington’s fashion industry for many many years. The industry is so challenging on many fronts and to be named alongside such luminaries as Joe is really very humbling. The induction, for me, is a wonderful realisation of all the hard work poured into the label over the years and makes me even more determined to strive ahead with my new aspirations for the brand.” The Gala will be the closing event for the City of Stonnington’s expanded two-day October 7-8 Stonnington Spring Fashion Runway featuring the Stonnington Fashion Industry Forum, an innovative insiders’ guide to the fashion business and the Stonnington Precincts Runway Show, which will present the best Spring/Summer 09/10 collections and spring racing wares in two separate parades from Toorak Road South Yarra, Chapel Street Precinct, High Street and Toorak Village retailers. For free tickets, call Chapel Off Chapel on (03) 8290 7000. All events are taking place at the Malvern Town Hall, corner of Glenferrie Road and High Street, Malvern from 7.00pm. Wood label, a Melbourne icon which has stood the test of time thanks to expert tailoring and fine knits. Ms Liano hit the Melbourne fashion scene in the 1980s and opened the first T.L. Wood store in Chapel Street, Windsor in 1998. Having parted ways last year with business partner, Chris Wood, Ms Liano is excited about the label’s new direction with plans to expand stores nationally, obtain international buyers and introduce denim and one-off leather garments to her range. Ms Liano is also a 2008 Caulfield Guineas Design Award winner. Joe Sillitto is a Melbourne retailer, now aged in his mid 60s who has always had a keen eye for the design market. During the 70s and 80s his trademark Chapel Street stores Scarpa Sillitto, Sillitto by Night, Sillitto and Sillitto Menswear were the byword for chic and style. Mr Sillitto is responsible for pin-pointing the creative talents of denim guru, Bettina Liano and her design sister and fellow inductee, Teresa Liano. Jenny Bannister was also another designer who caught his attention and he stocked these designs, and many others, across his retail portfolio. Here is a summary of what to expect on October 7-8, 2009. The Stonnington Fashion Industry Forum is the first official event on Wednesday October 7 at 1.00pm.
