**Cultural Program**

On Wednesday March 11 from 7.00pm students from the Academy of Design Australia will draw inspiration from 100 years of Carnival sideshow history as they present “The Odditorium”. For decades the sideshow has held a morbid fascination for the spectator, part enthrallment, part horror. Defined as broken parts or parts of once-complete sets, the runway show and accompanying exhibition challenges the spectator’s dark preoccupation with the irregular, challenging engagement by pushing the boundaries of contemporary attractiveness, dwelling on the fringe teasing out the nuances of beauty as it relates to the extreme.

The accompanying exhibition takes reference from the nature and intent of historical sideshow exhibits and carnival posters. Designed to engage the curiosity and fears of the viewer, sideshows often exploited social prejudices and misunderstandings about people who were physically different and marginalized. Often placed within cages or seen behind barriers, the performers were separated from the viewer, therefore heightening the sense of curiosity and fear. Carnival sideshows used personal tragedy and abnormality as a way to exhilarate audiences who sought a certain thrill by watching the misfortune of others.

The event will be staged at the Academy of Design Australia, 220 Ingles Street, Port Melbourne.

The exhibition dates are:
Wednesday March 11 to Friday March 20 (Monday to Friday opening from 8.00am to 6.00pm)

**Lavazza collaborates with Melbourne artist Beci Orpin for VAMFF**

Celebrating its120th anniversary this year, Lavazza is proud to announce a partnership with Melbourne-based designer and illustrator Beci Orpin to create a unique artwork on a giant Lavazza coffee cup at the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival (VAMFF).

Guests will see Orpin bring her creative concept to life as she paints the cup live at the festival’s opening night, Saturday March 14. The colourful collaboration will celebrate Italy, coffee and fashion, reflecting Lavazza’s strong heritage. Smaller takeaway versions of the cup will also be used to serve Lavazza coffee at the event from the new Fantasia A Modo Mio machines that will be officially launched during VAMFF.

Orpin is known for her bright and distinctive work, often made using different materials ranging from paper, wood and textiles to found objects. The clever designer has worked with a range of international and local brands, adding her personal flair to a variety of collaborations and creative projects. A woman of many talents, Orpin also exhibits her own artwork both locally and internationally and has four published books under her belt, Compendium of me, Find and Keep, Home, and Make and Do.

Lavazza General Manager at Valcorp Fine Foods, Trent Knox, said that Lavazza’s 120th anniversary is the perfect time to inject some creativity and colour into the brand and Lavazza is excited to be collaborating with such a respected local artist to bring the cup to life during VAMFF. “The spontaneity of painting the giant cup live at the festival’s opening night allows us to share the experience and discovery with our customers. I can’t wait to see Beci’s interpretation of the Lavazza brand,” said Knox.

Beci Orpin said, “As a long time fan of coffee I have always been admirer of Lavazza’s history and dedication to their product. I am excited to be working with Lavazza at VAMFF and looking forward to what we can create together.”

To see Beci create her artwork on the giant Lavazza cup live, head to Central Pier, Docklands from 6.00pm onwards on Saturday March 14.

A Modo Mio Fantasia is a compact, easy-to-use coffeemaker with a sleek design and uncompromised performance. Fantasia has a built-in container for fresh milk, so customers can enjoy the real Italian café experience at home by easily making a cappuccino, flat white, hot chocolate and, of course, the unmistakeable Lavazza espresso. 2015 marks seven years of Lavazza’s involvement in the Melbourne Fashion Festival, as the official coffee partner. Lavazza is proud to have a strong relationship with Australia’s fashion industry, having previously collaborated with Michael Lo Sordo and LIFEwithBIRD.
