:: Spotlight :: Yekaterina Peker launches 2007 Autumn/Winter collectionBy: Carmine PascuzziYekaterina Peker launched her Autumn/Winter collection recently to an attractive crowd of 100+ at the Sydney Dance Café in glamorous Walsh Bay, NSW. The rustic venue combined with dim lighting and sparkling red ‘Master and Margarita’ cocktails sprawled across the bar contributed to a night of fashion, creativity and awe-struck guests. After guests settled into the venue with a cocktail (or two) or a glass of Firebox wine along with scrumptious canapés, they began to gather around a space which had been decorated as a setting taken from the Russian novel Master & Margarita from which the collection was inspired. It was furnished with antique wooden pieces which were then decorated with a gramophone, antique Shakespeare novels and red and golden cushions and a tall lamp. A professional ballet dancer started the showcase with a dance choreographed especially for the Yekaterina Peker launch. Then the lights dimmed and the sound of a heartbeat resonated. When this sound effect stopped, a spotlight appeared at the far end of a wooden balcony inside the venue and the live mini orchestra began to play and the first model walked out wearing a feature coat from the tertiary coloured story of the collection. She walked across the balcony, down the wooden stairs and into the set. Three stories featured in the 40 minute showcase with more than 60 pieces on display. Each model made their way down the staircase and around the apartment setting. The extensive range was designed and made especially for the exclusive Sydney launch. Some garments were one off, conceptual pieces where Yekaterina experimented with self-derived techniques to see how particular solutions would react with silk. Divided mainly by colours, the first range focused on tertiary, turquoise and blues, the next on beige, gold and subtle blues and the last focused on black and red. Fabrics used included wool blends such as cashmere, alpaca and mohair. Along with the use of silks such as velvet, a large amount of fur featured and all accessories were leather. Despite designs being created with bold, strong silhouettes in mind, the range is extremely feminine with a heavy focus on glamorous dresses, gorgeous thick coats and skirts. Creation of texture was very important, to enhance this, Yekaterina used cotton thread appliqué, gold industrial spray and thick fake flowers. However, all garments were very structured and tailored at the same time. Bustiers were also in the collection created using fabric moulding techniques and enhance the beauty of the female form, a strong message consistent in Yekaterina Peker designs. All models had pale white make-up and brightly coloured string designs glued onto their faces. Their hair was styled quite high and carefully structured hair pieces combined with artistic designs to enhance the uniqueness of the label and its creations. Guests included prominent media personalities along with fashion editors from a variety of high end magazines. FashionTrend Editor Nikita Papas, who flew to Sydney from Melbourne specifically for the show, described the designs showcased as “simply breathtaking” and FT contributor Lisa Zamberlan said “I have been to a number of shows during my time in the fashion industry and these were some of the best designs I have ever laid eyes on.”
