:: Melbourne GPO's place for Valentine's DayBy: Carmine PascuzziFor 150 years, Melbourne's GPO has held pride of place on the corner of Bourke and Elizabeth Street. The heritage building is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, evolving from a bustling mail centre to a thriving world-class fashion hub. To celebrate the remarkable life of this magnificent building, the GPO has created an interactive installation dedicated to the many stories and characters housed within its walls. The GPO will be flooded with a cascade of letters, stamps, packages and postcards, capturing and celebrating its rich history. The display will wind its way through the colonnades and up the stairs to create an impressive visual spectacle.
As part of the interactive installation, shoppers will be invited to put their thoughts down on paper to post to a friend, just like they used to do in the old days. Stop by the GPO‘s 'typing pool’ on Valentine's Day (February 14) from 10.00am to 4.00pm and wax lyrical about your sweetheart. Nimble typists will print out your message on a specially designed letterhead for you to pass on to your special someone. Best part? It’s all for free! Sure, there’s none of the instant gratification that comes with email, but the pay-off will be worth it.
While walking through its glamorous archways, you’ll also learn about the fascinating history of Postal Hall and the upcoming restorations.
