:: Konstantina Mittas and Sportsgirl

By: Carmine Pascuzzi

Showing why this distinctive Sydney designer has earned a reputation as Australia’s ‘avant-garde’ designer du jour, Konstantina Mittas has created a range of daring and unique garments for Sportsgirl, translating her theatrical flair into covetable, ready-to-wear pieces that are individual and poetic. ‘Flight of the Stone Angel’ takes inspiration from the sculptural form of chiselled statues mixed with a wearable rock ‘n’ roll aesthetic. Reflecting the thought of angelic stone structures being set free, Mittas has created a range that celebrates movement, shape and drama. In colour ways of ivory, black, pale metallic pink and geometric angular patterns, ‘Flight of the Stone Angel’ is tough, yet feminine with subtly exaggerated shapes, featuring Mittas’ signature pleats, arcs, tucks of fabric and winged shoulders. The collection of statement pieces are to be an edgy addition, yet complementary to any Sportsgirl’s wardrobe.

The four dresses in the seven piece range are named as if they were ‘lady band rebels’. There is Miranda - an ivory panel rouched number, Elizabeth - a black bell sleeve, Penelope - a geo printed, winged shape. And finally Lady Louise, the leader of the pack – a long sleeved, puffed shouldered shift silhouette in a metallic pink fabric, specially mixed for this range. “By alluding to the angelic figures set in stone, the collection plays homage to the romantic idea of coming alive and being set free”, says Konstantina. “The ‘stone angels’ would make a great girl band of aristocratic socialite rebels!” With an embossed satin also fashioned exclusively by Konstantina herself for the collection, our Sportsgirls are going to feel distinctive and fashionably unique wearing it. And with victory as the overriding theme, we have 3 additional inspired pieces - a winged dress in black, a winged skirt in black and pink and a winged velvet sheer top in black.

Sportsgirl continues to collaborate with New Australian designers through the hugely successful Sportsgirls Like program which has showcased an enviable line up of designers and boosted the careers of some of the most electrifying design talent.
