:: PLUS Model Magazine Spring Issue featuring Anansa SimsBy: Carmine PascuzziPLUS Model Magazine Spring Issue features Anansa Sims, who is no stranger to the spotlight, the modelling industry and its standards. As Beverly Johnson's daughter, she had the modelling “bug”, but her curvy frame did not allow her to follow her dreams until she decided to take her chance at a plus size modeling career. Her journey was not an easy one, but where she is now as a mother, model, and wife is truly a dream come true and an inspiration to many women. It was the editorial heard round the world. Our feature with plus size model, Katya Zharkova, “Plus Size Bodies, What's Wrong With Them Anyway?” was something that we knew would cause “some” controversy, but never did we think that we would get the worldwide attention we have received and are continuing to receive. Throughout the month we received much praise for our boldness in publishing the pictures and for boldly standing up for the plus size woman. With the praise also came a lot of criticism over the use of our statistics and the photos, which many thought were too provocative and bashed skinny women. Visit our media page to see all the coverage. Katya said, “The body image statistics were taken from a great website, radarprograms.com and my personal choice to pair the images with the statistics was something I significantly thought about. For six years I have been speaking with, and meeting with brands and designers about where the modelling/fashion industry is headed and the answer is always the same - the plus size woman does not want to see herself and will not buy if we use bigger models - but PLUS Model Magazine's survey with 1,500 women last year told us otherwise and the amount of feedback we get when we feature a visibly plus size model in the magazine shows us the opposite. So what is really going on? I have my personal theories, and will be looking into them but in the meantime this feature was a way to direct focus to the "big elephant” in the room. Why are size 6, 8 and 10 models working as plus size models?" Conversations are happening, change is happening and plus size models have been on the lips of many people across the globe. PLUS Model Magazine has more great news to share in the coming months. Madeline Jones, PLUS Model Magazine Editor-in-Chief, shared, “We are living through history. The plus size woman is taking back what is rightfully hers; she is empowered and living life to the fullest.” Read it here |
