:: Cosmos

This comes in a special seven disc collectors edition - comprising thirteen episodes.

It took a while, but Cosmos, a hallmark science series about the creation of the universe has finally arrived. Digitally remastered after first appearing in our television screens over two decades ago, Cosmos has been watched by over 700 million viewers globally, thus making it the most popular science program ever produced.

It is hard to fathom that figure now, especially as the science TV genre has been reduced to cliched subplots riddled with faux philosophical questionings. Cosmos was and continues to remain the original article. It investigates the origins of the universe through a careful mixture of hard-nosed analysis and cluey predictions of the unknown.

Cosmos is also known as the high point of its writer and presenter, the late great scientist Dr Carl Sagan, whose enthusiastic narration is positively infectious. Throughout the thirteen episodes, Sagan literally takes viewers on a journey through the universe and covers a wide range of topics such as the origins of life, the lives of stars and the ever present danger of man’s capacity to destruct the universe through technology.

All of this could be a bunch of heavy gobbeldy-gook for the average viewer, but the key to Cosmos world wide successes is that all the information here is presented in an entertaining way, using dramatic story telling elements as well as stealing a few stylish flourishes from the sci-fi genre. The most notable being the haunting musical score by Vangelis (who later on went to compose his seminal soundtrack to Blade Runner). The special features here are also worthwhile as it includes a heartfelt foreword by co-writer and Sagan’s wife Ann Druyan.

If you are were to choose one science program to watch then go no further than Cosmos. It is fun as well as brainy.
