:: Kangaroo Palace

Kangaroo Palace is a mini series, produced by Australia’s Channel Seven and the BBC Channel 4, and was aired on television in 1997. It tells the story of everyday Australians, in the 1960’s, looking for more in life and they break out from their constrictions by heading to London to find their place in the big wide world.

Starring Jacqueline McKenzie, John Polson, Rebecca Gibney and Jeremy Sims as the four Australians, it won an AFI for Best mini-series and received huge ratings.

The classic Australian tale of heading overseas is still common to the masses of young Australians who have made the big trip to explore foreign shores. The four travellers take a bite out of the world, leaving everything they’ve ever known by boarding a ship to the other side of the world. They have great experiences and meet strange people in the only place they can afford to live, a broken down hippy house ‘Kangaroo Palace’ where other Australians find shelter in roaring London.

The characters are all really well rounded with great performances, and the scripting and costuming stand out. Kangaroo Palace is one of the best dramas I have seen for a while, and it really stands out for its performances and addictive storyline.
