:: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl DVD

When you think about some of the good movies over recent months, this one comes to mind because it is the typically great characters which make a something like this memorable. Moviegoers would have been plundered by a truly fantastic character in the form of Captain Jack Sparrow, as played by Johnny Depp. Captain Jack made the pretty-good Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl a truly memorable film. Now, it has been released on DVD and it's a brilliant package.

Along with its wonderful main character, Pirates of the Caribbean also has a fiendishly convoluted story. Depp gets all the good lines and steals the show, recruiting Orlando Bloom (a blacksmith and expert swordsman) and Keira Knightley (a lovely governor's daughter) on an adventurous quest to recapture the notorious Black Pearl, a ghost ship commandeered by Jack's nemesis Capt. Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), a mutineer desperate to reverse the curse that left him and his (literally) skeleton crew in a state of eternal, undead damnation.

As for the DVD detail, the image here looks fantastic, as it is very sharp and shows basically no grain — which is quite a feat considering the fact that a great deal of the movie takes place outdoors in bright sunlight. The colors look very good, and the night-time scenes are never too dark.

The film is full of action scenes which allow many opportunities for stereo, surround, and subwoofer effects. The two-disc set contains a number of extra features.

This DVD gets a high recommendation because it's got great content, interesting commentary and is real fun to experience in 5.1 surround.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl ably overcomes the cheesiness of its origins and provides a deft and lively adventure. It reignites the fun of pirate flicks and still manages to feel fresh and invigorating. The package comes stuffed with many interesting and informative supplements. It's one of the year’s most fun movies and best DVDs to date.
