:: Film Reviews View older articles in our archive HancockSince Hancock does not play slave to a source material, it does not come off as generic. The only film which comes close to matching its concepts would be the excellent animated film The Incredibles. Yet while its script may be shaky – especially with its talk of Gods walking amongst men – the films performances and Berg’s spirited direction make up for whatever flaws are present. The Dark Knight (I)Ledger’s portrayal of the infamous comic book villain has less to do with the glorious pomp and theatrics of Jack Nicholson’s Joker, and everything to do with anarchy, chaos, and destruction all done with a twisted smile on his face and sadistic menace in his black heart. More...Get SmartAll things considered, Get Smart is not bad, but I remain of the view that the brand should be left as an untouchable when it comes to remakes or reinterpretations. More...How About YouDirector, Anthony Byrne also does a fabulous job by not only capturing the spectacular Irish countryside but also manages to capture each character's emotions in a way seldom seen in modern film. More...Ten Empty…Ten Empty is a distressing and sad film to watch. Co-writer/director Anthony Hayes sets up tense altercations for his actors, and captures the carnage in several scenes that are held in a single frame, not flinching from the conflict before him. More...The HappeningShyamalan has tried to capture his old brilliance but it is nowhere to be seen in ‘The Happening’; a film that you feel would have been better off in the hands off a talented director such as Danny Boyle. Standard Operating ProcedureYet despite these often consistent bumps, Morris achieves his goal in bringing forth the stories beyond the photos, while asking which of these moments of ugliness are a criminal act, and which are standard operating procedure. Unfinished SkyDuncan’s social commentary about sex trafficking in Australia (which even reaches its vast rural territories) should be applauded, yet would have been much more potent if looked upon more often. More...The SavagesThe Savages is an absorbing watch; it holds your attention from start to finish but never bombards you with action or heavy dialogue. More...Shine A LightFive minutes into the show and after some old Stones interview footage, Bill Clinton opens the concert to hundreds of screaming fans and as the lights fade and light back up again, so too does the roar. You’re lost in the buzz of the audience, the heat of the lights and the electric guitar starts to blare… the Rolling Stones take centre stage. More...The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince CaspianFollowing the general rule of thumb, Prince Caspian is much darker and mature compared to its previous effort. There are several terrifically tense scenes bound to scare the kiddies, as well as plenty of PG violence in well choreographed and shot action sequences. More...Mongol…you cannot help but be drawn into this sympathetic and different portrayal of a man seen in Western society as a murderous tyrant. Even if its historical accuracy is questionable, the film itself is beautifully constructed and extremely engrossing. More...You Don’t Mess With The ZohanIt’s just the same old Sandler formula of uninspired gross out humour (how the hell did this film only warrant an M rating?) based upon a big concept. More...Sex And The City: The MovieAlthough clichéd in some parts, ‘Sex And The City: The Movie’ delivers what fans want; sex, love, laughter, fashion and most important of all the undeniable loyalty of four devoted old friends. "It wasn’t hard in execution. We didn’t want to get into long tracks about specific issues of Australian immigration policy or how the sex trafficking works in Australia. They exist as a couple of threads in what is a much more complicated sort of fabric. I didn’t want to hit audiences over the head with political themes and ideas."
