:: The White Masai (Die Weisse Massai)

At the end of their holiday in Kenya, Carola (Nina Hoss) and her boyfriend (Janek Rieke) meet a Samburu warrior named Lemalian (Jacky Ido). Carola is fascinated with the warrior and automatically falls in love with him. Carola decides to cancel her return flight home and sends her boyfriend home alone. She begins a search for Lemalian, which leads her to his native village, Barsaloi. Carola decides to turn her back on her home life in Switzerland to be with her warrior. What follows is an incredible journey in which Carola braves many obstacles to try and adapt to a foreign culture and build a new life for herself in Africa.

Based on the autobiography of Corinne Hofman, ‘The White Masai’ features a very talented cast. The performance by Jacky Ido (who is a French Citizen!) as the Samburu warrior, Lemalian is exceptional. The film delivers a great insight into the African culture - successfully capturing its traditions and customs. It’s a very serious film and contains a few mildly graphic scenes. But don’t let that turn you off! On the other hand, if you are one that enjoys a film that immerses you in the native landscape and culture, then this ones for you.
