The 57th Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) was launched with Eric Bana being announced as the event's Ambassador and a shock choice, “Not Quite Hollywood” by unknown director Mark Hartley, as the Opening Night's film on Friday, July 25 at Hamer Hall.

The 2008 Melbourne International Film Festival will screen over 300 films, including 10 World Premieres and a number of prize-winning films from World-Class festivals, including a record 23 films from Cannes, Sundance, Rotterdam, Berlin and Toronto Festivals. The programme will once again feature the work of world-renowned filmmakers, and more than a couple of unknown gems, in its popular Homegrown and Neighbourhood Watch, International Panorama, Backbeat, Animation Gallery, Next Gen, Forbidden Pleasures, Africa! Africa! and Documentaries series. The most highly regarded short film competition in the Asia Pacific, Best MIFF shorts screens approximately 100 short films, competing for a prize money of AUD$35,000.

Get Smart

All things considered, Get Smart is not bad, but I remain of the view that the brand should be left as an untouchable when it comes to remakes or reinterpretations.

Ten Empty

…Ten Empty is a distressing and sad film to watch. Co-writer/director Anthony Hayes sets up tense altercations for his actors, and captures the carnage in several scenes that are held in a single frame, not flinching from the conflict before him.

Hancock

Since Hancock does not play slave to a source material, it does not come off as generic. The only film which comes close to matching its concepts would be the excellent animated film The Incredibles. Yet while its script may be shaky – especially with its talk of Gods walking amongst men – the films performances and Berg’s spirited direction make up for whatever flaws are present.

The Dark Knight (I)

Ledger’s portrayal of the infamous comic book villain has less to do with the glorious pomp and theatrics of Jack Nicholson’s Joker, and everything to do with anarchy, chaos, and destruction all done with a twisted smile on his face and sadistic menace in his black heart.

Interview with Unfinished Sky writer/director Peter Duncan

"It wasn’t hard in execution. We didn’t want to get into long tracks about specific issues of Australian immigration policy or how the sex trafficking works in Australia. They exist as a couple of threads in what is a much more complicated sort of fabric. I didn’t want to hit audiences over the head with political themes and ideas."
