By: Carmine Pascuzzi

The 7th Byron Bay International Film Festival (BBFF2013) presented by The Owners Club at Linnaeus is once again bringing thought-leading people and films from around the globe together for a captivating, stimulating and entertaining dose of screen culture from March 1-10 2013.

Screening over 10 days in beautiful sub-tropical Byron Bay, BBFF’s relaxed, open-minded and progressive vibe attracts local and international filmmakers and industry heavyweights, including film buyers, directors, producers, actors and musicians, that come to soak up the action alongside thousands of cultural tourists and local film lovers.

BBFF2013’s organisers are passionate about bringing the best cutting-edge independent films from around the globe to the NSW Northern Rivers region, and with over 900 film entry submissions received, Festival Director, J’aimee Skippon-Volke has had her work cut out for her.

She said, “It’s definitely time for everyone to mark their diaries for BBFF2013. We’ve had an extraordinarily high calibre of entries this year and it’s just a matter of days before we start unveiling the films in BBFF2013’s Official Selection. You'll have loads of refreshingly entertaining, inspiring and thought-provoking films to choose from, whether you’re into surf and street culture, social change, the environment, self development or you just want to float into another reality. These are not your typical mainstream films so make sure you don't miss them at BBFF2013. There’s so many ways you can get involved with this festival. We have over 50 public screenings coming up, the gala red carpet Opening Night and Closing Night parties, an awesome sunset view from our balcony bar where our filmmakers and audiences mingle, introductions and Q&A sessions by attending filmmakers, free workshops and panels, plus screenings in Lismore and Murwillumbah. There’s great family films but plenty of more edgy, risqué ones too, so everyone will find something to pique their interest."

BBFF2013 has so far revealed two programme highlights. Firstly, after its huge success last year, the free public outdoor screening is on again next to Byron Bay Surf Club on main beach under the full moon, Monday February 25 at dusk. Second, any would-be filmmakers can make the most of free workshops over the closing weekend on March 9-10 where you can learn how to make your own movies with something as simple as an ipad.

Last year’s festival screened over 200 entertaining, inspiring and thought-provoking films. It saw celebrities such as Jack Thomson and Underbelly’s Vince Colosimo walk the red carpet fresh from the set of the Great Gatsby, while Jack Johnson delighted a surprised crowd when he performed an impromptu set at BBFF’s first outdoor screening held beachside under the full moon.
