:: Spotlight :: De-Lovely - the music of Cole Porter hits the big screen

By: Carmine Pascuzzi

Some of the cast of actors and guest musicians give their thoughts on the film De-Lovely in a conversation provided by MGM.

ASHLEY JUDD
Love Cole Porter, always have. So impressive.

KEVIN KLINE
Some of his songs are just, love. I mean, I think they're just beautiful.

DIANA KRALL
Suave. American's classical, classical music, it's Cole Porter. One of the greatest American composers of popular songs.

ALANIS MORISSETTE
Just his style of writing, very stream of consciousness and very whimsical, very tongue in chic, but yet, very warm.

IRVIN WINKLER
I wanted very much to attract the young audience for the film. Why don't I go out and try to get some young artists to be in the film and record it.

STEPHEN ENDLEMAN
Musically, we wanted to bridge the gap between the traditional recordings of Cole Porter, from the period, with new arrangements, which would include a little bit of tradition, a little bit of show, and a little bit of contemporary.

ROBBIE WILLIAMS
…I don't know if you've seen me before. But, in this film, I play the wedding singer. See the crowd in that church.

IRVIN WINKLER
We found that one after another, they all loved Cole Porter. All these: Sheryl Crow, uh, Elvis Costello, Alanis Morissette, Natalie Cole, all of them.

NATALIE COLE
A lot of contemporary singers are in this movie, which is really cool. And they get to sing these songs that their parents or their parents' parents danced to, and sang to.

SHERYL CROW
I get to be a part of a time that I completely adored, you know, the '30s, the '40s, that, that kind of crooner, you know, it's what everybody dreams of. So I get to actually, for a minute, I get to visit that world.

ALANIS MORISSETTE
The most refined ladies, birds do it. That was just me warming up, Irwin, just to let you know. They'll be more drive. They're be a Lamborghini in here. The Dutch in Old Amsterdam do it. To be totally honest, I'd heard of the sort of more well known songs, like Anything Goes. But, I wasn't, um, familiar with his life story, or any of it. And then once I read the script, and found out more about him, and got some CDs and then some music of his, I was just utterly charmed.

ROBBIE WILLIAMS
I get a bigger kick out of I kind of get a bigger kick out of singing this stuff, than I do my own. I, I think because you're allowed to me more theatrical. Because it is from that era, where your movements are bigger and your expressions are bigger. That's why I prefer to do it. 'Cause everything's here and there and over there. What a beautiful bridal suite. It's de reverie, it's de-rousing, it's de rhapsody, it's de regal, it's de royal, it's de…
I'm gonna be in the movies, Mom. How did she…, as we go gal laving down the aisle, it's de fine, dear, it's de vine, dear, it's de wonderful, it's de victory, it's develop, it's de winner. The night is…

ALANIS MORISSETTE
It's all over the top, glamour and craziness here. Which is part of, you know, the charm of coming and observing and all. I love people watching, so there is no better people watching than in Cannes.

ASHLEY JUDD
It's so abstract. It's so many people, it's so big, how can you be nervous, you know? I just figure, have fun.

IRVIN WINKLER
And what happens is, on that stage, on our left, we're gonna have a live concert, with Cole Porter music.

ALANIS MORISSETTE
A few of us that are here, we'll be performing some of the songs from the movie. Just a real honoring for Irwin and for Cole, and for Ashley and Kevin. And I'm so excited to be here. So sting me, let's do it, let's fall in love.

IRVIN WINKLER
Yeah, I think Cole Porter would have loved it, loved it. He loved big theater. He loved people loving his music. He was really, really not somebody who hid away in a cave, some place, and wrote music.
