:: Spotlight :: Designing 007 – Fifty Years of Bond Style

By: Carmine Pascuzzi

More than 400 archive items are set to dazzle Australian audiences in the highly anticipated exhibition celebrating the 50th anniversary of the James Bond film franchise. Melbourne will be the one and only Australian stop for Designing 007 – Fifty Years of Bond Style. To date the world tour of the exhibition has included London, Toronto and Shanghai.

Designing 007 – Fifty Years of Bond Style presents the craft behind the icon, focusing on the distinctly British luxuriance of the world's most iconic movie brand. The exhibition looks at the design and style of the James Bond franchise and the craft behind the sets, the music, gadgets, vehicles, technology and fashion over the course of five decades.

Victorian Minister for Tourism and Major Events Louise Asher said, “We are delighted to welcome such an exhibition to Melbourne, a fitting home for one of the world’s greatest style icons. I am certain that the universal appeal of Bond, together with Melbourne’s tourism and major events calendar, will draw visitors to Victoria and contribute to the state’s $19.1 billion tourism industry, As well as announcing the much anticipated sale of tickets to this exhibition, for the first time in its world tour, the exhibition will be joined in Melbourne by a vehicle from a film with a uniquely Australian connection.”

The vehicle is the 1969 Aston Martin DBS featured in the film ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE, starring Australia’s own George Lazenby as Bond. The car will be on display alongside graphic sketches, gadgets and costumes such as Roger Moore’s white tuxedo from OCTOPUSSY, the Spacesuit from MOONRAKER, the orange bikini worn by Halle Berry in DIE ANOTHER DAY and Daniel Craig’s sky blue trunks from CASINO ROYALE.

“There is already great interest in the exhibition – everywhere I go people are asking me about the Bond exhibition,” said Dr Patrick Greene, CEO Museum Victoria. “Even before today’s announcement of tickets going on sale, Bond fans have been booking corporate events, and we know there will be a rush to buy tickets – not least as wonderful Christmas presents!”

Designing 007 – Fifty Years of Bond Style comes from a collaboration between the Barbican and EON Productions. The unique exhibition curated by the Barbican, guest-curated by fashion historian Bronwyn Cosgrave and Oscar-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming and designed by Ab Rogers has unprecedented access to EON’s production archive. Designing 007 – Fifty Years of Bond Style is a multi-sensory experience where screen icons, costumes, production design, automobiles, gadgets, special effects, graphic design, exotic locations, weapons, stunts and props combine to immerse the audience in the creation and development of Bond style over its 50 year history.
