By: Carmine Pascuzzi

The yearly dose of excellent Russian cinema is on the radar again, with the national dates for the 2009 Russian Resurrection Film Festival set for August 19 - September 16.

Every year the festival gains more fans for this diverse showcase of quality Russian filmmaking, with audiences growing around the country. Last year 21 films over 22 days in 6 cities drew in the crowds for a taste of sputnik cinema. 2009 will again present a wonderful range of romantic comedies, dramas, war classics and retrospectives to provide a unique insight into the culturally distinct makeup of Northern Eurasia.

Already confirmed for 2009 are some of the latest films directed by previous Festival favourites. Watch out for the award winning Hipsters (2009), a high energy musical comedy by Valery Todorovsky, Director of 2008’s hit film Vice; and Admiral (2008), an award winning historic epic directed by Andrei Kravchuk, featured at the 2007 festival with his highly popular film The Italian.

Also confirmed for 2009 is the multi-award winning Wild Field (2008), a comedic drama directed by Mikhail Kalatozishvili, and the dramatic Morphine (2008) directed by Aleksei Balabanov.

The festival will again be presenting must-see Q&A’s with visiting Directors, an in-depth retrospective of past cinematic treats and rarities, and hosting one of the most highly anticipated opening night celebrations, awash with pure Russian entertainment and hospitality.
