:: Magnet - On Your Side

Magnet

Norwegian-born singer/songwriter Magnet (Even Johansen) demonstrates terrific vocal talent and hands-on musicianship in this fine album. With the hallmarks of melancholic pop resonating throughout, it doesn’t take much to be absorbed into Magnet’s blend of atmospheric and organic music. Add the understated beats and reassuring vocals and one is captivated by the artistry shown. Some listeners will notice similarities to other vocalists like Thom Yorke (Radiohead) and the late Elliott Smith, but he is warmer than Yorke and the singing is suitably low-key. A duet with Gemma Hayes is a highlight. Together, they perform a beautiful version of the Bob Dylan hit “Lay Lady Lay”. Then, there are other tracks like the country-folk style of “Where Happiness Lives” and angelic “I’ll Come Along”. The instrumentation is worth noting, as Magnet uses lap-steel guitar, strings, horns, and subtle use of electronica. There is no doubting the talent and inspiration that grows upon each listen to the album. Whether he can sustain this in the future will be the key, but all points towards Magnet being an artist to watch.
