Amanda Palmer is a very talented performer, as part of the charismatic Dresden Dolls, and also as a singer-songwriter in her own right. This solo record gives her the opportunity to push musical boundaries even further. The songs evolve from a wonderful vocal and piano structure. Her throaty voice thunders out her evocative and witty lyrics over raucous piano playing. Amanda provides almost a personal account of her life as she vividly depicts her characters, presenting us with tiny snapshots of the daily activities. Musically this album is unquestionably great (with Ben Folds on production duties adding his enterprise). Remember that Amanda is a top performer, so she can therefore hold the listener's attention. There is something to uphold in all aspects of this album. It's a wonderful piece of work from a clever artist, put across with all the passion of someone who has spent a long time thinking about and living with the project. Highly recommended.
