:: Aplonea - Under The Cover Of SunlightAploneaEPs are always messy business and Sydney based indie rockers Aplonea’s newie Under the Cover of Sunlight is no exception. It’s difficult to get a real radio-ready sound when you’re still learning the ropes. Not to mention how hard it is to compete against established bands with big budgets. But as this is their first foray into professional studio production, Aplonea deserves a pat on the back for Under the Cover of Sunlight. After all, it ain’t easy to squeeze the entire essence, feel and sound of a band into three short tracks. Title track ‘In My Heart’ is a fist-pumping rock anthem with a great melody. Lead vocalist Andrew Eddy gives it his best with some high notes and grungy screams alla Foofighters’ front man Dave Grohl. In fact, everything in this track, from the aggressive guitar to the driving percussion, has a very early Foo Fighters sound. From ‘In My Heart’ to ‘Sad People’ the instrumentation and tone change completely. Rock anthems are set aside as the boys kick into a sentimental and aching ballad. Simple and honest, the melody in this track suits Eddy’s voice better and is a direction Aplonea should stick to. The final track on Under the Cover of Sunlight is a heavily melancholic track. Aptly titled ‘I Wish My Eyes Were Cameras (As I See), the song is about inadequacy of preserving life on film and is accompanied by low key instrumentation. In all, a nice track and easily the EPs most unique offering, both lyrically and vocally. Sure Under the Cover of Sunlight isn’t going to blow your socks off. But there’s enough promise there to the let small flaws slide. Listening, you can see some edge forming and some sparks flying but they’re still got some work to do. | ![]() http://www.myspace.com/aplonea |
