:: Arbuckle - No HeroicsArbuckleI blame the sunshine. It is the only logical reason why so many great bands come from Queensland. No Heoics, the second offering from South East Queensland’s Arbuckle, is exhibit A when it comes to support of my hypothesis. There is something very different about these guys, their EP like the bottled energy of a kid on red cordial. You do have to scratch and dig a little to get an idea of Arbuckle’s talent. The recordings are not the best I’ve ever heard, but the poor quality is worth putting up with to catch a listen of band that is both unique and exciting. In terms of style, Arbuckle sound like a revitalised version of Jebediah, but as for the band’s sound, you are unlikely to hear anything else similar. It’s the distinct vocals that make the band stand out the most, not only as new players on the music front but also as Australian. Their Aussie accents team nicely with the somewhat odd lyrics, in particular ‘you’ve got the style of a crippled child baby’. Written down on paper it’s a line that under any other circumstance no respectable person would say, yet Arbuckle take it and turn it into songwriting gold. The line comes from one of the standout tracks on the EP, ‘Computers (Are The New Rock And Roll)’, the title perhaps a glib remark on the current music industry and its current manufacturing methods. Whether this is true or not, you can be certain Arbuckle are an outfit to keep your eye on. |
