I‘ve recently heard Ben Harper having been described as the new Paul Simon! This is in part because he loves using African drums and instruments of foreign or indigenous slant. It's fair to say that this is true but when he uses them the way he does so freely in his first single 'Better Way’ - who cares? To be compared to the great Paul Simon, I imagine, is a huge compliment anyway. After all, Simon has recorded some true classics over the years with many of his songs defining a generation. If Ben Harper is to be the new Paul Simon, then I could not think of a better musician to define my 30-something generation. ‘Better Way’ is yet another typical example of the genius that is Harper. His music is full of incredible passion and honesty, and it‘s very hard not to get caught up in it. There's even a moment during this song where he is incredibly angry and lashes out (vocally) in an intense tirade quite like nothing we've ever seen (or heard) from Ben before. If the rest of his new album 'Both Sides Of The Gun’ is anything like this track, we're in for one amazing release.
