Before I say anything else let me just say, ‘Wow!’ Whisky Sunset is an exceptional EP, a shining example of well performed and produced mellow rock. Find it, play it, enjoy it. Now that I’ve said that let me take the opportunity to explain myself. The Ben Smith Band has managed to capture, undoubtedly the most important element of great music, communication. ‘Whisky Sunset’ connects with the listener on a personal level, painting vivid pictures with a seeming effortless skill. There is an unashamed approach to discussing personal matters, love and loss and all the light and shade life has to offer. The band's talent is evident on all the tracks on the EP, but their communication skills are best displayed on the heartfelt ‘Hold My Breath’. A complimentary combo of acoustic guitars and powerfully subtle vocals, it is an absolute stand out. As I sat listening to it with the cover in my hands I heard the line, ‘You can spend your lifetime looking round for treasure, but I know it’s in my hands’. I had to laugh at the irony of the moment; yes, I had a treasure in my hands, and what a treasure it was.
