:: The Boat People - Soporific

The Boat People

‘Soporific’ is The Boat People‘s newest offering from their forthcoming album Dearest Darkly and it is inspired as its title. But first a little background. The Boat People toured with Red Riders in late 2009 and are just now experiencing a little taste of that band's fame. The boys hail from Brisbane, which isn't surprising because it seems all the fresh new bands hail from up north these days. Their genre is supposedly indie pop, but 'Soporific’ is not so clear cut, with some very interesting Beatles-esque chords and an electric current that would be insulted if you called it pop, it‘s far too good for that. Strangely the spanner in the works is not so much this single's tune or its vocals. In fact, its vocals are superbly mellow and the whispered verses freakishly impressive. The pace is constantly changing, catching you up in tragic, ambling tones before throwing you in the air with a rocking explosion of noise and power. But the track's title is ridiculous. Understandably, The Boat People like weird track names. They separate them from the rest of the pack, but vocalist Robin Waters’ can barely pronounce soporific. It just sound so stupid and out of place in what is an otherwise brilliant track and a fantastic taste of what's hopefully to come in Dearest Darkly.
