:: Bryan Ferry - DylanesqueBryan FerryArtists like Bryan Ferry always bring with them a sense of familiarity, comfort and ease. Having already established himself as an inspired and enduring performer, there seems to be less reason to scrutinise his latest musical efforts, and instead see it as a welcome invitation to relax and enjoy. ‘Dylanesque’ is one invitation I am more than happy to accept. The album is essentially a story book, filled with the great tales originally told by Bob Dylan. Sure, these tales have been renovated slightly, orchestrated and sewn together with Ferry’s distinctive vocals, but none of their original mystique or honesty has been lost. Ferry has been respectful in his treatment of these classics and it shows. I think even the most dedicated Dylan fan would find it hard not to like these reinventions. Most impressive is the tender ‘Make You Feel My Love’, which mixes all the elements to perfection. Ferry’s weather worn vocals are rich with narrative and paint so clear the picture of finding and losing love. Also worth a mention is ‘All Along The Watchtower’, arguably one of Dylan’s most well known songs. Ferry does not deviate too much from the original, but still manages to make the song his own and avoid letting it descend into mere mimicry. Taking an original and making it sound original again, is why this album is so endearing, and as far as I am concerned there is nothing wrong with that! | ![]() |
