:: Carus Thompson - Creature Of HabitCarus ThompsonSince twelve years of age singer/songwirter Carus Thompson began playing pubs and various communities around his hometown of Fremantle, Western Australia and around the outback with Aboriginal communities as young as a child. Growing up he lived in Darwin and Melbourne and then travelled on circuit tours overseas. His first albums were ‘Mind's Eye’, 2002, a self titled EP, then a full length album ‘Songs from Martin St’, 2003, and in the same year released ‘Acoustic at the Norfolk’. Soon after, ‘Long Nights are Gone’, 2004, he went from long time independent musician to having a 3 piece band called ‘The True Believers’ to back him up and they had hit singles which broadcasted nationally. After joining with the band they recorded ‘Three Boxes’ in 2006, which became popular very quickly. Over the years with much travel throughout Australia and Europe and touring with other great performers such as Dave Matthews, John Butler, The Waifs, Damien Rice etc., Carus gained quite the reputation for himself and especially a big fan base. His sound is acoustic and portrays a sweet, folk melody. On his latest album, Creature of Habit I find myself wanting to sit on the couch with a glass of wine, or go outside on a patio in the sun, or drive the country side, anything to hear his tune and tap along or relax to. ‘Creature’ puts you in a good mood and I find his voice soothing and the music enjoyable, at times uplifting and rock and roll'ish. His singing is familiar with a little Bob Dylan-esque tones, sometimes with the Jeff Buckley softness; you can tell he enjoys what he does and has been doing it successfully most his life as he defintly has talent and a flawless voice. His lyrics say a lot about his life as child and growing up, about the roads he‘s taken, travelling and seeing much of the world. Then other songs are about realtionships gone array, but still how he can manage to move on. My favourite tracks in this release which say it all are 'Burn’ number 2, album titled track ‘Creature of Habit’ number 3, ‘Long Time’ country bop, number 5, ‘Eye of the Storm’ number 6, very melodic, ‘doing Time’ a faster paced knee slapper, and last but not least‘ Prisoners of the Rodeo’. I suppose you could say I pretty much rate this CD as well worth picking up, since I really liked most of the album. I would love to see Carus Thomspon live as I know it will be a fun show. | ![]() |
