Coby Grant is a great little find for those serious music fans out there who are looking to discover a genuine Australian female artist who has the talent to write her own music. Her new EP ‘Fanfare For Love’ is a welcome break from the bad pop that floods our commercial stations. Opening track ‘I Know That I’ll Know’ is sweet melodic pop with an alternative edge and will be quickly lapped by fans of artists such as Regina Spektor or early Lily Allen. ‘Once Upon A Long Gone Time’ shows Grant’s skills as a songwriter and is so damn good that I was left scratching my head and asking ‘why isn’t this on radio?’ ‘Jump’ is a good piece of smooth happy pop that is screaming to be used on a TV show soundtrack while my favorite track was the fun song – ‘When I Was Young’. This track playfully leaps from your stereo but when you scratch under the surface you see Grant’s talents as a songwriting shining through again as the lyrics are as deep in meaning (and storytelling) as a Paul Kelly track. A great little EP from one of Australia’s hidden secrets.
