Daara J

Musical genres truly take on a very different perspective when given a world music makeover. Daara J, winners of best African act in 2004, have taken hip hop to a whole new level and opened it up to a wider, more appreciative audience. Instead of rapping about bling bling, guns, ho‘s or fast cars, this trio cut to the bone and fire up the imagination and your social conscience to sing about real pain, suffering, injustice and survival. Backed by some wicked African beats and rhythms, Daara J rival the best in the business. From the little known country of Senegal, these guys traverse freely and easily through French, English and Wolof (an African dialect I'll assume) taking you along for the complete musical journey. It's powerful, passionate and pure! Out here recently as part of the Womadelaide festival, Daara J (which means School of life) bring an energetic and exciting brand of hip hop to the uneducated. For a totally rewarding experience, check out their amazing album 'Boomerang’ - it's a thorough reawakening.
