:: Darren Hayes - This Delicate Thing We’ve MadeDarren HayesThe great thing about Darren Hayes' status in music is the fantastic success that he achieved with Savage Garden. It has enabled him to make music as he sees fit; on his own record label, without any pressure that comes from record company and radio station scrutiny and decision making, and choosing to indulge in all forms of styles. “This Delicate Thing We’ve Made” covers all shapes imaginable for a pop artist who loves to ignite a passion for thumping drums, layers of synths and fearless electronic beats. His 1980s heroes such as Prince, Madonna and Peter Gabriel are well remembered through the stylings of this ambitious 25-song double album. But one must think and suggest that Darren has been courageous in releasing such a collection of songs. Double albums are a rare thing these days and he displays a great sense of adventure and passion. Above all else, the quality of the recording is there to admire. Some interesting examples are the edgy “Me, Myself and I”, the ballad “Sing To Me”, which demonstrates his excellent vocal form, and the soaring and captivating “How To Build A Time Machine”, where he transports us back to his childhood and whatever things he might have changed. “Step Into The Light” shows Darren's fine upper register in full flight and is a glorious song. “On The Verge Of Something Wonderful”, duly recognised as value for its single release is a wide-eyed piece of classy pop. The interesting thing is that in a business sense Darren could have cut the album in half and delivered two albums of very good quality. But no, he has taking this opportunity to compile his thoughts into one overall musical journey which should be admired for its entertainment and emotion.
