Long before Marrilyn Manson donned his eye liner and leather harness to cover ‘Personal Jesus’, Depeche Mode were delving into the darker side of electronic synth rock. Their sound is understated and far more haunting and memorable than any of the imitators. Well, with the exception of ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’, that irritatingly catchy hangover from the 80s, memorable for entirely different reasons. This album will take you places, some you’d probably rather forget. It’s a long, dark, beautiful trip.
