The Detroit Cobras

Being my first listen to the Detroit Cobras, the Motor City band delivers a dynamic album, where they put their own minimalist slant on the varying blues rock styles of the past. The musicianship is an all or nothing feeling, leaving nothing to chance, and the vocals are delivered with attitude by the fiery Rachel Nagy. The thing to note here is whether the Detroit Cobras will be applauded for this album that contains several covers, mainly from the days of Motown soul. The band plays them exceedingly well however. Watch for a couple of their own fervent tracks, ‘Hot Dog’ and ‘Cha Cha Twist’, where they prove their songwriting worth. This style is a raw, cut back to the essence of the original and then delivered with passion and energy. ‘Everybody’s Going Wild’ is exactly that in the way the band puts it forward. “Slipping Around” is a cool opener, with some nice East Coast harmonies. There’s a beautiful groove in their version of ‘Just Can’t Please You’. Generally, it’s hard to fault the style and talent on show. The musicianship is adept and Rachel's vocals are often dramatic and full-on. Watch for their live shows in Australia soon.
