Whilst three-piece Dion Jones & the Filth was featured on the Grow Your Own Vol.9 compilation in 2004, this CD shows Dion to be one of the best local discoveries of 2005. His rich voice is clear and strong and the accompanying musicians help deliver a capable, warm soul-pop record. Apparently, this recording took quite a while to eventuate but the result is very tangible in getting the best out of their abilities. The track that took my attention immediately is track 2 ‘Frightened Of The Dark’. It’s an excellent pop song that is definitely radio-worthy. Generally, the even standard of the tracks should be considered favourably by listeners who like good steady pop rock, as well as the charm of acoustic-based songs. It’s the voice that is so noticeable and striking. The range is breathtaking and amongst very few I’ve heard in Australia in recent times. As long as Dion can write prolifically and sing with such skill, there is much to be optimistic about.
