The Dissociatives

Once it was known that collaboration between Daniel Johns (from silverchair) and Paul Mac would take effect, it was thought that something special might eventuate. They had worked together during silverchair’s “Diorama” sessions and it seemed everything just clicked. We had been warmed up for this project’s debut album by the excellent and infectious first single “Somewhere Down The Barrel”. Now, we can unwrap what is one of the best Australian releases you’ll hear this year. Paul and Daniel have combined in full cohesion and created some fantastic arrangements. The insightful lyrics, the profound moods, and effective hooks makes for one great package. And such is the ability of these two men that you could consider this CD so inventive that it’s ahead of their time. Some of the other notable tracks are the brilliant “Lifting The Veil From The Braille”, a beautifully relaxed tone with whistling. The mood of the track reminds of the great Grandaddy moments. A joyous, carnival-like atmosphere embraces “Horror With Eyeballs”, and the thumping uptempo beats of “Thinking In Reverse”. From the 60s harmony base through to 80s synthesisers, the sound feels fresh and invigorating. There is so much to like and it’s hoped that these two men can find time to build more sublime sounds.
