I’ve always been of the opinion there are two groups of people in this world; fans of country music, and everyone else. I included myself in the ‘everyone else’ category, pointing and laughing at anyone who identified with the former. But as hesitant as I am to admit it, I might just be – shock horror – turning into a country music fan. Listening to Canadian country rock trio Doc Walker, I couldn’t help but get caught up in the melodic, down and dirty way these boys tell their stories through song. Having been long involved in all things music and well known in their Canadian home, the three use their collective talents to craft a record deeply country, yet fresh and new. Their lyrics come dangerously close to being sickeningly cliché but manage to just veer off the path. ‘Echo Road’ seems so familiar, a song you could have been singing since you were little but ‘Annabelle’ would have to be my favourite, a fast paced, yearning love song. As with most country music I felt, at some points, the songs seemed to bleed into each other, the above-mentioned tracks the pleasant signposts in between. I have the feeling more discerning country palates will surely find this release to be to their liking.
